It seems my screen light has burnt out.. as one day my laptop went into sleep mode then the screen never worked again (despite being able to power off and on, I knew this was working because the little blue and orange lights near power button were changing colour).. I thought it was a goner but then I plugged my projector in (HDMI to USB) and I can work on my laptop while looking at the projected display no problem!
This happened once before while it was still under warranty and was fixed and returned to me. Is the light only good for a year?! Laptop is now 2.5 yrs old and this is the second time.

You probably simply need to replace the LCD video ribbon cable which usually develops conductor trace breaks in the hinge area from opening and closing the lid too much. Google your 'full switch model number' and 'lcd cable' for vendors convenient to your location. Price is reasonable and usually around $20USD. Jack E/NJ

You can verify it's the back light by shining a flashlight on the screen at an angle. The normal display will show up, albeit tough to see.
