hello,
trying to upgrade a handful of veriton X4610/20G desktops from Win7 to Win10.  Question is, will an image backup from an external usb work without any windows 10 licensing issues?  I've upgraded 1 system using the free Microsoft Win10 migration path (vs a clean install).
thx in advance

No, you can't image one machine and restore it to multiples. They'll all end up with identical licenses, and the duplicates will be revoked when first connected to the internet (actually, MS does have a path for that, it's how companies like Acer can produce lots of machines without installing each, but it's much larger pain to setup than you're going to want for just a handful of desktops). Better to follow the same upgrade path you used on the first with each of the others.

Was it an X4610G system that your upgraded to Win10?
If so then I would like to ask you the following questions because I'm facing the same.
    1. Does Win10 and do all integrated peripherals (WLan ext) and drivers work on the X4610G? (Because the X4610G is not listed to be fit for Win10.)
    2. Did you use the Win7 license key from the sticker on the PC?
    3. Would a clean install also work using the sticker on the PC?

    marty,

i'll have to get back to you to confirm but i THINK i have both X4610G's and X4620G's.

    1) integrated peripherals/drivers: not 100% but only bc everything works.  i didn't look at device manager nor did i find any win10 drivers for my models.
    2) i didn't try. from what i've read, link below is for an upgrade.  i've read someone stating a clean install is possible if you do have the valid win7 key.  BUT, i can't verify how/what win10 will do with respect to drivers/peripherals. if you have time to kill, full image backup of 7, clean install and see what happens.  i didn't want to take that chance nor have that much time.

    win10 tools

i downloaded the tool, created an iso then used virtual clone.  mount drive (i used c:\temp) and ran the following:

    G:\setup.exe /auto upgrade

If you have lots of these, i'd suggest running the first without /quiet. win10 will kick back any issues/unsupported apps but /quiet isn't clear where the issues are/were.  i couldn't find any logs either but didn't spend too much time trying to figure this out.  microsoft essentials, for example, will need to be uninstalled.  once you've fixed all these things, kick off the same with /quiet and just let it run.  oh, and make sure Win7 has all updates.  that was an issue.

    G:\setup.exe /auto upgrade /quiet

i've used this method on at least 15 different computers at various client sites, all upgraded...eventually after the uninstalls/win7 updates.  if you have lots of these, i would think creating a file share would work without having to copy the iso around.  or, MDT/WDS would make the most sense with a large number.

i won't be able to confirm if i have the X4610G until next year 1st week of january.

    good luck

    marty11,
sorry for the wait.  i have 2 x 4610G's, both still running 7.  i will verify next tuesday  but i THINK that one failed during the upgrade.  i haven't attempted to upgrade the 2n'd yet.  that 2nd one is a print server which i plan to upgrade when all others have been done. will get back as soon as i can.

Thanks for your reply. I'm also still running Win 7 and am at the brink of upgrading, but will be in a pickle when it fails. So I'm very interested in your experiences.

    Thanks for your update.
Where did your Veriton X4610G in-place upgrade to Windows 10 fail on?
Are you running the latest BIOS on the machine? (The latest BIOS version is: P01.B3)
I read somewhere that the HDD should be formatted GPT and the BIOS should be set to UEFI boot mode in order for Windows 10 to work. But those setting might be right only for a clean install of Win 10. Have you at least been able to get digital entitlement to Win 10 by attempting the in-place upgrade?

It should be possible to upgrade to Win 10, because I see this.

After about 20 failed in-place-upgrades I managed to isolate the following problem with the Veriton X4610G upgrade to Windows 10:

Remove the PCIe WiFi card from the system before you attempt an in-place-upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10. You can place it back after the upgrade is complete. Otherwise your upgrade will fail with error code: 0xC1900101-0x4000D and your upgrade will be rolled back. Your Windows 7 license will be upgrade to a free Windows 10 digital license.

The problem boils down to the incompatibility of the Ralink WiFi driver to upgrade to Windows 10. After your digital license kicks in, you can do a clean install of Windows 10 (on GPT disk, booted with UEFI) without any problem.

Look here for Finding Windows 10x64 drivers for the Veriton X4610G.

To answer my own questions now that I have more experience:
    1. Yes Windows 10x64 works on the X4610G. Also the integrated peripherals (WLan ect) and default MS drivers in Win10 work (although not optimally).
    2. The Win7 license key from the sticker on the PC does work to activate Win10.
    3. A clean install of Win10 works and can be activated using the key on the sticker on the PC (no need to temporary remove the WiFi card).
