Hello.

So far I have thought that the Acer Aspire 5 is made out of plastic material, except for the top cover.

However, yesterday I was told by some tech shop employee that the Acer Aspire 5 has two generations. Namely:
- the above mentioned where laptop is plastic + top cover alu
- improved generation where the palmrest (the area around the keyboard/touch-pad) is aluminum

Can someone confirm or deny, please?

To be more precise, I am curious about this model: A515-54G.

They come in a lot more than two flavors, but most of the differences are locale specific and typically have two for each keyboard layout, a black and a silver. It believe the top is plastic in both the black and silver variants, it's a complex enough shape that doing it in aluminum would have increased the cost by quite a bit. Most aluminum chassis' use a simpler shape and discrete components for the keyboard and touchpad. The A515-54G has the keyboard built into the top cover, though the touchpad is a separate part.
