My Predator model is PH317-53-77HB, it comes with 8gb RAM. I would like to upgrade it to 16gb, and I'm wondering if it's more advisable to buy another 8gb stick (HyperX 2666), or if I need to buy a whole 16gb kit and replace the 8gb that came with the unit, to make sure that both sticks are compatible with each other. I've googled this issue in general and there are so many conflicting answers dating back decades so I figured going directly to Predator folks to see what you think was the best idea.

oobula you can mix and match but bare in mind you have to have both sodimms with same size/clock/CL to work in dual channel but of course its always better to have dual channel set from same brand as they were matched to work perfectly just to be sure they will always work fine together i prefer to spend the money in good upgrades than spend less and regret myself in the long term i have 32gb hyperx jedec costed me almost 2 years ago about £400 for a dual channel set but i would do it all over again and about the same price for the 2tb ssd so i ended up spending in just 2 upgrades almost the price of the laptop itself ( i ended up spending even more with the 5tb external :) ) but its up to everyone themselves to decide on what they want to spend on it if they are planing long term or short term because short term its not worth to spend much on it if you get rid of it after

You can buy any stick 2666 not necessarily Hyperx as it is more expensive
Hyperx you might want to buy if you would overclock memory or use Xmp profile which won’t happen  =)

8gb of hyperx is only 10 dollars more than 8gb of crucial so i'd splurge to make sure it's real good quality.

does everyone agree with @belik that you can mix and match ram sticks with no problemo? i can buy an 8gb stick instead of replacing the factory installed 8gb with a 16gb kit?

this basically confirms what i was thinking; you can mix them but for stability and peace of mind it's better to get a kit

It can even run with one stick 2666 and another 3200, it works at 2666 dual channel  no problem

Yes it works in dual channel (technically but in reality you will be forcing one of the sodimms to work at a lower clock i dont see the point if the laptops only supports 2666 anyway) but will always be at the lower clock available and its not the same cl either so basically it might cause bad performance and personally i dont recommend it its just a waste and might work well for some and not for others the exact same hardware doesnt perform the same way for everyone but hey everyone is free to do what they think its better for them :)

On unlocked bios ? probably what about on locked ?? i woudnt do it anyway if we were supposed to mix sodimms anyway we wanted there wouldnt be dual channel ready sets because we wouldnt need them neither no one would care to do performance benchmarks on dual channel sets as they would be useless

Nope, on locked one, those modern system are very friendly in mixing memory
But I agree it’s always better to have the same modules and even from the same batch))
