Apparently Acer does not support this update.  My Dell and HP computers with  same hardware intel i3 and win 7 premium and same vintage updated without any issues.

Why does Acer have such a poor attitude towards their client PC owners?.  Or is there a fix?

    Hello satdirector

Sorry to hear about your experience with windows upate and i appriecate your efforts in trying to resolve the issue.
The best option is to restore your device with recovery disc.
While everyone expects a new version to be better than before, a small number of users have come across several problems with the experience, including issues with apps, performance issues, missing features, and bugs with the user interface.

The SNID entered will returns an error message if the correct region is not selected. Kindly select the correct region

What errors do you get when trying the upgrade? It may just take a bit of searching to find drivers.

It stops at at 87 %  of installing update. About 3 hrs.     It then  reboots   uninstalls all the  update files.  then reboots back to Windows 7. That process takes about 10 minutes. So I end up  with no windows 10.

Some folks say it is the Wifi  card others say we need a bios update.  Why does Acer not respond ?. I am apparently not the only person with a M3970. Nobody can update.  If Acer cannot or does not want to invest in customer service they should just say so.

Or  What does HP and Dell have  in their i3 chips and Windows 7 premium  software that Acer does not ?

There are log files that the install generates that can help us find out where it's failing. Take a look at them to see if they make sense or zip and attach here so we can look them over for you. I'm guessing, as you suggest, that there is a driver that crashes in W10 that's causing the problem. Remember though that your computer was released in 2011 (at least I see reviews from early 2012, so it was likely for the 2011 Christmas season) and in those years there have been a lot of changes.
As for Acer responding, this is a community support board and Acer doesn't have engineers that monitor it. The only Acer employees we typically see here are the ones that support the forum software. You can contact Acer support, but it's unlikely they'll provide much help with a machine that is so far out of warranty...
The most common fix I've seen for earlier version of Windows 10 is to remove the WiFi card before starting the update. The card that in there doesn't like W10. The card could easily be replaced by one that is compatible with the newer OSes.

Removing the anatel Wi Fi card solved the problem.  Thank you bilsey.

However I still would caution computer buyers about what I consider poor business practice from Acer a Taiwan company. They have had a lot of train wrecks Gateway e machines.

Acer Canada has  the bare minimum service . no humans. Acer USA has some human help. The Tech dept. was not helpful. They should known that  they installed many substandard Wi Fi cards.

I will more prudent on my next purchases and advise others to do the same.

In this case it was pretty much out of Acer's hands. When the WiFi card vendor decided not to update drivers for W10, and Microsoft decided not to support older drivers either the only solution was to replace the card with one that was compatible. Not something that anyone would do as a post-warranty fix on a retired model. :(

Did Dell and HP Wi Fi card vendors update their drivers, use better WiFi cards  or did Microsoft just decide to be more helpful to them. Perhaps Dell and HP  do post warranty fixes on retired models.

My point is why did Acer not care about its customer?  Why did they not admit they had substandard cards.? In Acer and Gateway.

Why not just  be helpful.?  Best Business practice.

Bad business practice results in  loss of  future business and  business associates business as well.

Hard to justify bad business practice.   Just makes it worse.

So I will not be surprised when  Acer fades away or has to change it's name.

Dell and HP best business practices will win in the end.

    @satdirector

I think you might be overreacting a bit.  Acer uses quality wifi cards in all of their products.  It sounds more like you had some bad luck as there were a handful of old wifi cards that didn't get updated wifi drivers.  Mostly broadcom cards.

My card is RAK Rt3090 PCIE-C!  mfg  07/11/2011  made by Ralink Tech  Ca USA  acquired by MediaTek (Taiwan) in march 2011.   Some sites claim to have win 10 drivers.  Media Tek does not

Good learning experience with this upgrade challenge. Put Acer on a stock watch list.  just curiousity

The harder I work the luckier I get.

I will stick with Dell  USA for my next purchases. Always had good luck with their products.

I remember paying over $3200 for a desktop in 1996.  They are pretty much dirt cheap now days (assuming you live in a first world country).

In my opinion, it doesn't make much sense using a 2011 desktop with a legacy BIOS that doesn't have GPT and secure boot capabilities.  Not worth the risks or headaches or slowness.

Just as an example, the desktop in link below is much, much faster than your 2011 desktop and has a UEFI (not a BIOS).  It has an SSD.  It comes with a Windows 10 license. It's like night and day from your old 2011 dekstop.  And it's only $400 bucks.   I wish they had $400 desktops in 1996.  The desktop in link below is about 10,000 times better (and faster) than what I had in 1996.
