My chromebook spin 15 (CP315-1H-P75Z) won't turn off the backlit keyboard

The backlit for the keyboard is controlled by ALT + brightness controls, it also shows up on the screen. But my keyboard won't respond to the input I give. Even when I close the lid it stays on. Is there any way to fix this? I don't need my backlit on all the time and want it a lot more dim

    1. Turn off your Chromebook.
    2. Press and hold Refresh Refresh + tap Power Shut down for 40 seconds
