Laptop crashes while playing games for no reason, not the heat. (brace yourself for a long story).

Hello everyone,

So I Bought an Acer Helios 300 one year ago ( Core i7 7700HQ, 16g RAM, GTX 1060), things were going well until I contacted Acer over a problem that I can't remember right now, at that time they told me to rest the PC and I did and the problem was not fixed. However, a new problem came at the line, the heat. the laptop started to show a high temps reading for doing absolutely nothing other than watching YouTube using Chrome, reaching up to 60c or even 70 while plugged in. I removed the thermal paste and renewed it and cleaned the fans. Temps started to dump down up tp 39c while not being plugged in. However, while plugged in it continued to show 65-70c after over just the YouTube. I started using the XTU to undervolt my CPU and found that -.135 is stable for the system, with no actual benefit on the laptop while plugged in. After that, a new problem came up, it is that the laptop started to crashes after unplugging it from the power supply and when gaming for like 30mins or 1hr. I thought it was due to the heat. so after digging for months, I found about the Power Plan and about Core Parking so I used both to lower the temps. And now it reaches way lower temps than what I anticipated, now it idles at 37-39c and may go up to 40-41c at max, and while YouTubing it reaches like 44c, and even when gaming it stays under 70c, that's amazing isn't is. However, the problem of the crashing is still present but now it's only while gaming. can you help me with a solution to make this problem disappear?.
I am really sorry for the long story but I wanted you guys to understand the full of it so that you might help me and thanks a lot.

FII Might be anything a driver windows updates have you does it give any bsod if so check whats causing it using bluescreen viewer if no bsods check your windows even manager also have you tried to undervolt using TS instead of xtu sometimes xtu causes issues lastly if nothing works i suggest you to backup everything and reset it to factory stock clean install ALT+F10 on boot delete everything option to rule out any software issues.

Also what is your full model number?

I updated all the drivers except I think the Bios one and my Windows is up-to-date, though, there is no bsod bluescreen appears when crashing, it just freezes for a couple of seconds and the system reboots again, I think it's worth noting that when it reboots again the fans usually starts to spin in a crazy way and the overall temps increase. For the Throttlestope I am intending to use it over the XTU, today I'll try it and post back about it. For the model number, I can't reach it right now but I'll post it to later if it can wait. But xapim I can't actually find the "windows even manager" or how to use it, can you walk me through it since there is no bluescreen appearing? Thank you so much for helping.

FII if it freezes might be too much undervolt ??? gpu overclock ?? have you tried to undervolt your gpu creating a custom curve and the windows event manager its under administrative tool/computer management/event viewer/windows logs/application if you cant find anyway to get the issue solved you can always try a stock recovery reset

I think I tried to Undervolt my GPU once. So, should I go for lower undervolting values like -.120, -.110, ...etc. rather than -.135 that I'm using right now?. Thanks for the information about the Windows event manager, I didn't know anything about it before.

FII yes try to go with lower undervolt values to see what happesn but i would use TS instead of xtu in some cases xtu makes the system unstable :)

you can follow the links in my signature and fetch a ready undervolt TS conf for you cpu just copy/paste

or you can do it manually like i did

FII computer management/event viewer/windows logs/application also if youre in the latest win10 1903 and if you use msi afterburner it was reported by many users that the latest windows updates crashes/freezes when using msi ab probably a bug from MS or done on purpose to see if ppl stop using msi ab to overclock/undervolt the gpus who knows whats happening in the background :p

I don't actually use the MSI ab at all I'm just using the XTU. For the latest update, I went on to set the undervolting value at -.120 instead of -.135 and it works really well. I tested the laptop by playing NFS Payback (Full HD, Ultra Graphics with V-sync) for about 2 hrs and it didn't crash. The temperature got maxed at 75c and was averaging 70-71c the whole time, it's not the best compared to what I was getting before but at least it didn't crash, I mean that's a good thing, isn't it?
BTW xapim what can I use the Windows event manager for? I didn't use it my whole life so don't know anything about it.
