Bought an external cd drive and created a 100 gb partition in my Aspire 5. Tried to load win 7 using my old setup disks and failed. Any ideas?

    Good evening jimwrye !

What EXACT model of your laptop?
    What version of Windows 7?
    Did you try dual-boot?
In UEFi mode it is not possible to install any version of Windows 7 in this way.

Yes, it's UEFI mode. Any way around it?

For a UEFi mode Windows 7 installation, some requirements are required:

1- A single version ISO must be used with only one of the following distributions: Ultimate, Professional, or Home Premium with SP1 included
2- the flash drive must be created with Rufus in GPT mode with UEFi support
3- Bios must be set to Uefi with SecureBoot disabled
4- HDD must be converted to GPT
    5- use a USB 2.0 port

Thank you. Now I have somewhere to start. Going to take me awhile to run all this stuff down. I'll get back to you when I do.
If you think of any short cuts, I'm still listening.
    Thanks again,
    Jim

This is the basics for installing Windows 7 on UEFi.
As soon as you start the procedures and finish let me know.

    Probable dumb questions,...
2- the flash drive must be created with Rufus in GPT mode with UEFi support.
My plan was to use a CD (optical) drive. So then I need to create a flash drive from that?
4- HDD must be converted to GPT
My Acer doesn't have an HDD.
    Thoughts?, Jim

2- It will only work via USB media (USB stick, etc)

4- It doesn't matter if it's HDD or SSD.
It must be fixed for GPT before.

Thank you. Apologize for the redundancy.

Well, I thought I had it. Win 7 was completely loaded and on the final restart, it froze. After clearing it and trying a few more times, I got an error message stating I couldn't run that version of windows. Win 7, Home premium, 64 bit.

I suggest you test with another installation media (USB stick)
