Video Driver Update for Aspire 5745G

I am looking for some advice or help in updating the video drivers on our Aspire 5745G. Mainly I am wanting to update the Intel portion of the driver...the nVidia driver seems to be fine. I am just a little confused, as in Device Manager it does show the Intel HD adapter, and showing it using the nVidia drivers. We are using the "switchable" nVidia drivers currently.

When I switch the video to "save power" mode the laptop shows to be running on the Intel driver, namely driver 8.15.10.2104. This particular driver version is not allowing Windows Update to give us SP1 for Windows 7 due to Windows 7 SP1 instability with Intel 8.15.10.2104. Thus the reason I want/need to update that portion of the video drivers. We need SP1!

I have found Intel VGA version 8.15.10.2202 available on the Acer website. In order to properly install this driver, and not wrecking the laptop, should I change the display mode in BIOS from "switchable" to "discrete", then install the Intel driver only? Or should I also install the newest "switchable" nVidia driver from the Acer site after installing the Intel driver?

Thanks in advance for any advice, help or suggestions!

Installing the Intel driver should not "wreck" anything.

Discrete is the nVidia card, while Switchable would default to the Intel.  It shouldn't be necessary to make any changes in BIOS to install the video driver.

    Hope that helps.

    Acer-Tommy,

Well, I did install the Intel driver, and it actually did wreck the nVidia drivers. After reboot there was no longer the nVidia control panel available, and the nVidia GT 300M adapter was disabled, and could not successfully re-enable the device. So the Intel driver did install, and it did affect the nVidia drivers. Also, the max screen resolution I could get was 1024 x 768, and honestly the appearance was worse than running under DOS.

It did start downloading SP1 with the new Intel drivers, which I did not realize at the time. I ended up rolling the Intel driver back, rebooted, and nice display once again, nVidia CP back, etc. However, as soon as I rolled back SP1 stopped downloading I'm sure due to Intel drivers 8.15.10.2104 being back. So I am basically back where I started....old drivers and WU refusing to send SP1.

So, my question is, exactly what procedure should I use to properly install the Intel VGA update and still have the ability to use the nVidia adapter and drivers once completed? Should I also update the nVidia switchable driver after installing the updated Intel driver? As you know, we are going to need to get SP1 on the laptop successfully in order to continue receiving Windows updates after April.

I'm going to recommend backing up all personal data and restoring the system to factory defaults.  Then apply all Windows Updates, including SP1.
