V223W LCD Monitor and window 8 compatibility issue

Would be grateful if someone could assist.

My previous vista desktop worked perfectly with my ACER V223W LCD monitor.

I have just upgraded to a window 8 desktop. In Control Panel / Screen Resolution I set resolution to 1680x1050 @ 60Hz which is the max resolution for my V223W LCD monitor. However the resulting screen leaves a large black border on either side which are not utilised. To make things worse everything (pictures in Picasa, youtube videos, text, etc) look compressed laterally (slimmer than reality).

In desperation I tried other resolutions including wider-screen options than 1680x1050 but to no avail. These wider-screen options, such as 1920x1080 (yes, I am aware this exceeds the max resolution of V223W) and 1600x900, eliminates the black border on either side of the screen BUT all photos and videos and text and desktop icons are still compressed laterally.

I have checked for newer driver for the V223W but only one for vista is available.

Anyone has any idea, please? Thanks in advance.

If you have tried different resolutions and drivers, I would try it on a different computer to see if it works.
