Problem appears on Acer VN7-791G-74XP laptop with Windows 10, which is not really used much at all.
Did suffer from a mild tea spill about a month ago, turned off instantly, was taken apart, had a single minor leak below keyboard, was dried for a couple of days.
There were no issues with keyboard for about a month since that spill.
Occasionally one of 2 defects appears, can appear and disappear within a single session:
1. Some keys stop reacting at all (S,D, Caps Lock, G, H, both Shifts, "-" on number pad while "-" just above P is working)
2. Same keys may not work from the first press, repeated presses may or may not help, sometimes pressing other keys helps
Other interesting findings:
- When keys are not working, keyboard backlit is not enabled on key press (when on battery)
- When keys are not working, they are not working also in BIOS
- Bluetooth keyboard works fine, so it's unlikely that it's some kind of hotkey setting malfunction
What was checked and doesn't seem to be helping:
- Driver uninstall / restart
- Disabled Filter Keys / Sticky Keys / Toggle Keys
- Checked Acer Support for updated drivers (were none from 2018 or 2019)
- Similar issues in community (none really matching this case)
Few directions of further investigation:
- Rollback of most recent Windows 10 R1903 update did not solve the issue completely, but made it less acute (typed all the above on without issues)
- Haven't tried running alternative operating systems, might exclude Windows issues if there are any
- Resetting Windows 10
- Replacing keyboard module
