Aspire E1-570g bluetooth pairing issue

So I've been using this laptop for about 5 years but never really needed to use bluetooth, so I don't know if this has ever worked before.
I'm trying to pair a headset (which I paired with phones and other laptops and works fine) to my pc (which doesn't pair with any of the bluetooth devices I could find in the house, so I'm pretty sure it's the guilty party).
At first it didn't even detect bluetooth devices. I updated all my drivers, tried the solution here https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/203333/aspire-e1-570-bluetooth-connection-woes?breakffcache=a6ddc , and now it does see bluetooth devices but there's no "Pair" button, only "Delete this device". Sometimes it shows one device as connected for a couple of seconds and then it says disconnected again (and there's no response on the particular device, no beep or nothing).
Windows troubleshooting is basically useless, the "Bluetooth USB Volume" driver shows as up to date, and I'm not really sure what to try or where to look.

Thanks for your help.

(I'm on Windows 8.1 btw)

Does Device Manager show any red or yellow warnings. If not, do you see a BlueTooth folder in Device Manager? Do you see any BlueTooth subfolder in the Network Adapter folder? If still nothing, do you see any BT icons in the tray? Jack E/NJ

No, all good in device manager. The bluetooth folder only contains "Bluetooth USB Volume", which appears up to date, and the network adapter folder doesn't have any subfolder. It does contain two bt-related items that are hidden, but up to date. (one for private network and the other for TDI RFCOMM protocol? )
I do have a bt icon in the tray.

    Oh hang on
I actually toggled the "display hidden files" option halfway through writing my answer and went back to the bluetooth folder afterwards, turns out it had a dozen items with my headset name. Deleted them all, tried pairing again, and it suddenly works !
