FN + F7 just turns 'caret browsing' Off and On, it doesn't affect Touchpad

FN+F7 suddenly only turns on "caret browsing". It no longer affects the Touchpad, as of today, after one year of working fine on my ACER Aspire 5 515-54. And my touchpad will not work. I have gone into deep settings, Device Manager, installed and uninstalled, and even RESET my entire computer, to no avail. Yesterday the touchpad was fine, and yesterday the F7 toggled the touchpad on and off normally. I have also restarted the laptop about 10 times today. Nothing works. I have been on a lot of blogs to see what I can do to fix it. I see this ACER touchpad problem a lot. This is my third ACER Aspire, I have always really loved this brand. But this last laptop has been very problematic. The speakers do not well. For a long time the headphone jack was wonky. Now the touchpad is simply not working, although in Device Manager is checking out as working fine, and in the Settings it is turned. I am very disappointed. ACER Cust Svc is not as good as it used to be. With the pandemic my laptop is very important, this is very frustrating. Thank God I had an exterior mouse I could put on the laptop to function. But I spent the entire day trouble shooting the touchpad for nothing. The touchpad!!! Such a basic part of a laptop. How can it fail like this? On a one year old laptop? And an expensive one too. I spent twice as much as this purchase as the other too. Was not worth it. And I doubt anyone will even see this or give me an real help.

Usually when the function key toggle for the touchpad isn't working there's an app running that takes over the keys. Have you added any apps or add-ons recently?

    billsey,

Thank you for taking time to respond. I had not added any "addons" recently.

The only event was a Windows 10 update which was waiting for download and install. But I had not look at or touched when I went onto my laptop yesterday am and discovered the touchpad was non-functional, and then did all things I describe in my comment from yesterday (5 Aug 2021). So I was forced to you an external cabled mouse. Which worked well.
This morning I turned on my "shut down" laptop and the touchpad works again. ??!!??!!

As to the problem with the FN+F7 function key only toggling "caret browsing" on and off, when normally it is the toggle function key for the touchpad, I am afraid to check it. When I logged on and opened my browser (Firefox) I got a popup floating icon of that key, the hand and scroll thingie, with a diagonal line through it, and I had that yesterday too at times, but do not know what it is nor why it is, never saw before yesterday. I also ran virus full scan software three times which took hours, and malware software scans several times, as well as "reseting my laptop" which was a huge time drag as well. I could find nothing on why that function button changed function to choice I have never even heard "caret browsing" in the almost 40 years I have been using computers and Windows. "Caret browsing" is obviously a possibility some may use in certain settings, but how my function key was changed and could not be changed back? A coding corruption error? No idea.

Well, according to my Google search, Caret Browsing is something they've added to Windows 10 that works with most major browsers and allows you to select text on the page without the use of a mouse. It's toggled with the F7 key. So if your keyboard is setup for media keys (where F7 would toggle the touchpad on and off) you would toggle Caret Browsing with Fn-F7. If your keyboard is setup with function keys then you use F7 and toggle the touchpad with Fn-F7.

@Erperry is your keyboard setup for media keys or function keys? Have you tested both Fn-F7 and F7 by itself?
