I am obtaining a new computer and I am immediately purchasing a 2nd SSD drive. Do I just add the drive or is there any need for data transfer from the original SSD drive that came with the computer to the new SSD drive. How long does it take to add the second drive?

Have you checked that ssd has been recognized in the uefi INFORMATION tab? Also, ideally you clone the hdd for ssd!

I'm old school so here's the disclaimer:
I don't recommend doing it yourself and do not accept responsibility for your decision or anyone else's decision to do so.
You should always consult the owners manual and take your computer to an authorized service center for all repairs and upgrades.
That being said the below information is for entertainment purposes only. :)

There is a 2nd m2 slot and the back cover is very easily removed.  There are videos on the internet for installing a m2 drive. In this case the process (after removing the back cover) requires removing 2 screws from the drive retainer, lifting off the drive retainer, putting in the drive, and reinstalling the drive retainer with both screws. So IF you know what to do, and are willing to do it completely at your own risk of potentially damaging things and/or voiding the warranty, it takes about 5 minutes. If not it takes longer and is probably best done by a professional.

If you're looking at a standard sata ssd, keep in mind the included kit says to take to to an authorized support center to have it installed.  It also specifies installing the drive yourself may affect your warranty.  The zif slot on the motherboard however is pretty obvious.  So IF you know what to do, and are willing to do it completely at your own risk of potentially damaging things and/or voiding the warranty, it takes about 7-10 minutes accounting for the need to put the rubber on the drive and get it in place correctly. If not it takes longer and is probably best done by a professional.

As for copying data that depends on if you plan to replace the existing m2 drive or just put in another. Putting in a 2nd drive does not require copying the old drive to the new drive but a backup is never a bad idea when touching internals. If you do plan to replace the old drive,  this process will probably take more than 5 minutes and requires an external adapter to clone the drive prior to installation. I can't quote an exact time as I have not personally gone through this process on this computer.

Thanks for the advice from all. I plan to take it to a computer service company that is familiar with Acer but I also wanted to make certain that they didnt add on additional service time charges because of me being newbie. Your group advice puts a frame work on my decision.

  • The cloning process is much more important than the backup itself because in addition to copying the files, it also copies the hidden recovery partition from Acer, which allows the user to reinstall the windows provided by the manufacturer! So my advice is to do a hdd cloning for the ssd @voidyourwarranty!
In addition, if the user does not break any warranty seal or damage any part, the warranty on the notebook will not be violated!

I bought the same model predator about a week ago and i am looking to do the same exact thing and add another drive. I've been doing some research and my question is what type of drive i need as far as sata/NVMe. I am looking at purchasing the Samsung 970 EVO 1TB - NVMe PCIe M.2 2280 SSD (MZ-V7E1T0BW). Its the same type (although not manufacturer) that is in the computer already. Do i still need to clone/format before installing?

  • Ideally, you clone the hd to ssd, so that Acer erecovery and software warranty are preserved!
