Try an ALT+F10 cold boot reset as shown in the video below. Jack E/NJ

i tried that but it just kept saying media not found - i then installed the usb i had with the drivers and windows on which took me to the screen showing diagnose my laptop or turn off - there was no factory reset option.

I tried the diagnose option but again it was saying no media found. i tried installing from the usb but it said no space available yet on diagnosis it shows only 18% had been used. confused.

OK. Shut the machine completely off again. Then turn it back on and immediately press the F2 key to enter the BIOS menu. Do you see the Toshiba or any other HDD or SSD listed in the INFORMATION tab? Jack E/NJ

The Toshiba drive has crashed or is not fully seated to its mainboard connector. Jack E/NJ

Do you know how to access the HDD, remove its screws so you can pull it out to reseat it? If not, what is your full ACER ES1-4xx model number? Jack E/NJ

Unplug the charger. Remove the battery pack. Remove one screw and slide the DVD drive out. Then remove 16 more screws and pry off the bottom cover starting from where the DVD drive was removed. lift the HDD (C in bottom picture) from its rearend to clear the case and pull it away from its mainboard connector.  You don't have to pull it completely out. Just partly out, then push it back in. Repeat this reseating process a dozen or so times to help clean its connector contacts. Then re-assemble and test to see if the Toshiba re-appears in the BIOS Information tab. You can leave the DVD out during the test. Jack E/NJ

Thanks but i don't have a clue or nimble enough fingers to do that. If i took it to be mended what would it cost please? Thanks

You seem to have at least 3 very highly rated laptop repair shops nearby --- Caspers, PCKey & ANC. See if you can get a repair estimate. If the Toshiba just needs reseating, probably about an hour's labor. I'd guess about £50. Jack E/NJ
