Laptop powered up ok and in use this morning, then ran Windows 7 update. Got the message to restart in order to complete update, system powered down and did not restart. Fan running. Have tried removing battery etc, to no avail.

Sorry. Your machine is almost a decade old. The normal warranty period is one year. So the SNID would not be recognized as still being eligible for warranty repair. I suggest that you take it to a local shop for an estimate. It could be as simple as re-seating the other connectors you weren't able to reach. Jack E/NJ

Remove the charger. Remove the battery again. Press and hold the power button for about a minute. Replace the battery. Replace the charger. Try to turn the laptop back on. Then immediately start tapping the F2 key to enter the BIOS menu. When the BIOS menu appears, press the F10 key to save settings and exit. Jack E/NJ

Thanks, tried all that another couple of times, but pressing f2 had no effect, so I can't get into the bios. The hard drive light only flashes for a second and then goes off again. Any other suggestions will be gratefully received - I don't like giving up, but it is getting close

Press and hold the power button till the laptop completely shuts off. Might take up to 10 seconds of pressing and holding the power button. Then press and hold the F2 key while momentarily pressing the power button to turn it back on. Keeping pressing the F2 button, Jack E/NJ

Thanks thanks for replying. I've been trying that method most of the day, and also attached the laptop to the TV ..... Screen still black.

OK. Do you get any audio indication that Windows may be booting like a welcome tone or beep? Jack E/NJ

No, no beeps .... and blackness, apart from the blueness round the power button, the blue lights indicating when the charger is plugged in, and when the battery is in. And a momentary blue light suggesting that it is at least looking for the hard drive.

OK. Remove the charger and battery. Remove the screws from the HDD and RAM doors. Remove 1 screw holding the HDD down. Pull the HDD from its mainboard connector. Then re-insert it. Repeat this HDD re-seating procedure about a half-dozen times to help clean its contacts to the mainboard. Put the HDD screw back in. Then spread the spring-load tabs with your fingers on memory modules till they're released and pop up at an angle from the slot. Then pull them out and clean their contacts with a soft cloth and rubbing alcohol. Wipe them dry and let them thoughly air dry. Put them back into the slot at the same angle and push them down till the tabs lock them back in again. The screw both doors back on. Reinsert the battery and charger. Try to turn it on again.  Jack E/NJ

I had already done all that, but have done it again and there is no improvement unfortunately. As there is no bootable disk, and I can't get into the bios to access the restore partition, I think I will have to give up.

The BIOS does not have the restore partition. There seems to be something wrong with your keyboard if you cannot access the BIOS with the F2 key. Try re-seating the KB mainboard connector a few times to try to clean it up. Jack E/NJ

Thanks, have had a go but this is beyond my capabilities and I have had to give up. I tried emailing support, but my serial number is apparently not valid so I rang and was disconnected twice. Will go out and buy an new laptop this weekend, but it won't be another Acer I'm afraid.
