Aspire One CB 14 and the dreaded "There was a problem re"

Good afternoon.
Trying to help a friend with the above model, it sounded like a reset was needed.  So, I backed up all of his stuff, and hit reset with wipe.  It got to about 44% and gave the error "There was a problem resetting your computer.  No changes have been made".  And that was the last time I saw Windows 10.
I know this is a common problem, but I've tried the following:  Manual battery reset, cmd sfc, cmd chkdsk, cmd system and software rename, restoring secure boot in bios.  None of it has enabled the machine to reset, no matter which reset I try.  It no longer boots past the Acer splash screen.  Windows startup repair refuses to run. Both sfc and chkdsk say they find and repair errors if I restart the machine after the last time that I run either of them. Does it sound like the eMMC is gone, or could it be something else?
Thank you in advance.

Please re-check the model number as the CB prefix suggests a chromebook model. Jack E/NJ
