Can keeping the laptop plugged in damage the battery?

I have a Acer nitro 5 (AN515-51) which I bought last March. Last month, the laptop when plugged in kept going into battery use. (the AC power would stop and it would run on the battery for a second). Now my battery wont charge to a hundred. It says plugged in not charging. I can get it to charge a little by restarting and plugging in the adapter right at the login screen. But it wont go over 88%

The Acer agents over here said i would have to replace the battery, and asked if I leave it plugged in. And also if I use a power extension chord. Is this something that can hurt it?
