Hello Community:  I tried installing an Intel 660p M.2 2280 2TB NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 3D NAND Internal Solid State Drive in Slot 1 (empty slot) in my Acer Predator 500 Helios (PH517-61-ROGX) laptop and the computer only boots to the internal bios (meaning I get only to the Predator logo), but the computer fails to continue the boot into Windows 10. I'm thinking this suggests that adding by adding extra memory in Slot 1 the computer is trying to boot from Slot 1 and not the ACER installed 256GB SATA SSD with the system at purchase in Slot 2. I tried pressing the function key "F2" in order to check the BIOS boot-order to make sure the computer is booting from Slot 2, but it didn't take me to the BIOS screen. I tried "F12" also on separate boot attempts. But wasn't able to get the boot-option dialog box.  If I remove the memory the computer boots and operates satisfactory.  Any suggestions on what's happening here??  Thanks Bart

Why do not you clone 256gb ssd for 2tb ssd and then place 2tb ssd in place of 256gb ssd?

Thats exactly what i suggested :) and put the 256 in an enclosure because it will always work at normal sata speeds via usb/usb-c as far as im aware so the 2tb nvme via external wont do him any good
Ok guys I did it.  I put my 2TB NVMe PCIe SSD in an enclosure, cloned the OS, removed the factory-installed 256GB SSD from Slot #2, removed the 2TB from the external enclosure and installed the cloned 2TB. Guess what - It worked!   Thanks for the inspiration!  Bart

PS: I'm going to start a new thread about the compatibility of those two M.2 slots.  Discovered a few things along the way.

  • This model already come with a ssd of 256gb nvme! You have already verified if putting the intel 660p in place of the 256gb ssd, if the computer boots normally! I'm also not sure if this model accepts a 2tb ssd nvme!

Hi there:  According to ACER's website SLOT 2 in the Helios 500 supports M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 (see link below).   ACER claims it has only tested this slot with a 500GB SSD, but there have been postings on the Internet with users installing 2GB.  Bart

@psychfilms that is the Ryzen version of the H500 only one of the slots is nvme the other its only normal sata to be able to use your new intel you would need to test both slots and see in which one it will recognize the nvme and if the 256gb ssd that u have is already nvme (and it should be on slot 1 because that is the only nvme slot in that model if you moved it into slot 2 its normal it will not boot because the OS is on it and it will not recognize it) you would have to clone it into the intel and remove it from the laptop as i said it only one port is nvme and regarding what u previously said you are wrong only slot 1 supports nvme you have the ryzen version not intel the intel supports 2 x nvme see below so again i suggest you to clone the nvme you have on slot 1 into the your new ssd (using and usb nvme adapter/enclosure) or cloning it (easeus partiton master) to a normal hdd then from the hdd to the new installed nvme on slot 1 its up to you how you do it

I have the AMD version (Ryzen 2700 & Vega 56 GPU). The OS is in SLOT 2 (SATA) the open M.2 is SLOT 1.  The table you posted above says NVMe PCIe or SATA for SLOT 1.  I wonder if that means you can insert either a M.2 SATA or the NVMePCIe?  I would think the PIN configurations would be different, thus in that case my SLOT 1 fits NVME PCIe.  I think I'm going to give up trying to put the 2GB stick inside.  Rather I'm going to use an enclosure and have fast external storage.   Thanks for the advice and tips.

well as far as i know the pin configuration should be the same as technically the sata should work fine on nvme slots the difference its that the slot supports more lanes (4x) than the sata (2x) slot i have a 2tb m.2 wd blue 3d nand but sata only and its fast enough for me and cheaper that nvme more than half price and @psychfilms you have a beast there :)

If you click the link below, you'll see that someone has a 2 TB M.2 PCI NVMe SSD installed.  I don't know which slot is which.

The Helios 500 is truly a beast. I do video editing and needed a portable 8-core.  I added a 2TB 2.5" form factor SSD in the other SATA slot.  Works great.  I want to have just my editing projects on the 2TB and the 256GB SSD with Window 10 OS.  Also I upped the RAM to 32GB, but was disappointed to find out that the OEM installed RAM is only 2400MHz.  The advertised RAM was 2666MHz. :(

The Intel M.2 NVME PCI3 x4 I'm trying to install internally was meant to be the storage for my video files.  I'm just thinking now just to get an external enclosure for the 2TB M.2 NVME and that way I can make those stored video files accessible to my other two computers.

Thats od what memory did u got i have 32gb hyperx 2666 and i have the correct speed with it or are you saying that the stock memory you had was 2400 if so that is normal they used to ship with 2400 only on the ryzens as they have more cores use less memory at least this is my supposition of it they only shipped 2666 with the intels

@psychfilms the ram frequency its not constant it will boost more or drop (sometimes mine it will drop to 800+-) regarding the usage check your spd and compare with mine you can see the latency its not the same and it will go for the lower also 2666 runs at 1333 as u can see on mine then multiply that by 2 you get the 2666 so technically you should get about 1200 on yours but im talking about xmp memory like the hyperx that i have (its expensive 32gb costed me a fortune about £380 and im still paying for it :p the m.2 2tb was the same price so i just upgraded the memory and the ssd and spent almost £800 as u can see it doesnt come cheap to upgraded it properly) the oem (cheaper) memory will get a bit less as doesnt have xmp support to boost
