Laptop suddenly runs extremely slow

Hey all,

I have an Acer Predator 15 with a NVIDIA GTX 1070 running windows 10. I used to frequently play games on it such as Overwatch and Witcher 3 on (almost) highest settings and consistently get fps over 40.

However, lately I have been busy for university and I spent a long time programming on my laptop with Python and write reports with LaTeX and didn't game for a couple of months.

After all my work was finished, I was looking forward to start playing again. Unfortunately, for some reason my laptop can't run most games effectively anymore. Overwatch averages at 4 fps (really) and even magic the gathering arena only reaches 14 fps. The only main thing I've done with my laptop between this is run (quite heavy) programs on Python using Spyder, nothing else. It also seems like I can't adjust the brightness of my  screen anymore. I don't know if this is related to eachother.

What could have happened and how can I fix this? I bought this laptop about a year ago. My internet connection is perfect (download speed is still around 6-8 Mb/s when I downloaded all my patches). Thanks in advance!

Details:
Model: Predator G9-593
NVIDIA GTX 1070
i7 - 7700 HQ CPU (@2.8GHz)
500GB SDD and 100GB HDD
64-bit
16GB RAM

Cheers

Update: the fps I mentioned for Overwatch and MTG Arena were average fps measured in the in-game menu. I just started an Overwatch game where I did not exceed 2fps and did the MTG Arena tutorial against an NPC where I averaged 3 fps... I kept an eye on task manager while playing MTG Arena and it showed that my CPU was constantly at 98%. The only things running were MTG Arena and task manager. Memory was only at +- 30%.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

What version of nVidia geforce graphics card driver are you on? The latest is 419.67 just for reference.

When gaming, do you know what your CPU and GPU temperatures are? Also, can you see  in task manager what your CPU speed is while gaming? This information can help tell if either CPU or GPU is overheating and throttling. Or if there is another limiting factor.

Thanks for answering! I just found out what went wrong.

Because you mentioned to check out my GPU temperature, I realised (through task manager and PredatorSense) that my GPU wasn't even operating. By chance I opened GeForce experience, which asked me to update some NVIDIA software, which solved the problem. Thanks man!
