My Helios 300 screen went black while gaming. I tried restarting but the screen looks VERY dim and can barely see something if you use a flashlight on it. If i plug in an external monitor it works just fine. It looks like the actual display stopped working, even though something shows even if barely perceivable. Do I need to replace the screen?

screen backlight damaged. you will have to change screen.
however have you tried Fn + F6 key
    or
open the back cover, next to where the position of the trackpad is , there is a small pcb board with cable connecting to the mainboard. this is the hall effect switch board. this detects when your laptop lid is closed and switches off /on the screen accordingly.  check the connection of this cable.

Yes, I tried Fn + F6 and nothing changes. I think the switch you mentioned works as the external monitor I have plugged in blacks out for a moment if I open or close the laptop lid. I believe if it was that switch not working it wouldn't black out as I open or close it. I guess I just need to replace the screen.
