I have an Aspire TC-780A with an Intel I5-7400 at 3.0 GHZ.  I was troubleshooting an issue with a tech when he asked how many cores my CPU had and pointed out there were only two showing in both Sys Info [Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7400 CPU @ 3.00GHz, 3000 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)] and Sys Config. This is a four core chip, so where are the other two?  I went into Sys Config and only options for boot are 1 or 2 cores.  Checked the BIOS and nothing there dealing with the cores  Any help would be much appreciated!

Found a random article on Tom's Hardware that suggested going into Sys Config, Boot Tab, Advanced Options and uncheck the "Number of Processors" box. The tech that initially spotted the error had me pull down the menu and we moved along because there was only a one or two processor option.  I unchecked the box and rebooted and... four processors in Sys Info now.  Went back into Sys Config and rechecked the box and the pull down menu has option of 1, 2, 3, or 4 processors.  Not sure why anyone would choose to shut down cores, but...  It is what it is.  Processor utilization is now about half of what it was before, go figure.  Weird solution, but I'm fond of saying if it's stupid and it works, it isn't stupid.  Problem solved, yay!

Same as Sys Info, 2 Cores, 2 Logical Processors.

I just went into Device Manager and interestingly, it shows four processors.  I'm not sure if it's just showing the logical processors as a physical processor, but I couldn't see any difference between them in the properties of each.

That is so weird! You aren't running in a VM by any chance?

Nope. Nothing fancy here, just straightforward MS Office and some other random programs.

I'm stumped, I remember older i5s that were two core, four logical, but not with your 6th gen...

I agree and not sure how to chase this one down. It is a weird one for sure.  I'm trying to follow up with Acer support as I just saw a bios update that is for my processor that I read past as its at the bottom of the list and had to look up what it meant as I'm not up to date on all the processors codewords.  The update is labeled Support KBL CPU and now I know that is Kirrby Lake processor which is the gen that I have.  Will update later on my luck.

No joy.  Updated the bios and... still only two cores.  Tried Acer chat support and its just for trying to sell me a support session or contract.  Very disappointed with Acer across the board, so much for a good deal.  Now looking for a replacement as the processor is maxing out all the time, a problem that I have been living with for several months, but now have the time to set up a new PC.  Thanks for trying to help, Billsey!
