Can I pair preinstalled 4gb with a new 8gb ram module by kingston?

Hey,

So I bought an acer predator helios 300 with 8gb of ram recently. I would really like to upgrade to 12 gb so some stuff runs smoother. I already bought another ram module by kingston (8gb). It seems there are two 4gb modules in my laptop already and I only have two slots so can I replace one of them with the new one without any problems? Since I found a lot of different opinions on the internet I thought maybe you guys can help me out here.

Current one is 8Gb (2x4gb I guess), DDR4, PC4 17000 (2133 MHz)
New one is Kingston HyperX Impact 8GB DDR4-2666 CL15 SO-DIMM

Buying two 8gb rams isnt really an option at the moment.

Yes, you can use 8 + 4! However, in case you own a hd, in my opinion, it would be more interesting to spend the money with a ssd m2 2280!

Mhm okay, Ill consider this for the next upgrade! I really don´t know much about all of this stuff. I already spent the money on the ram so I will stick with it for the time being. But I will keep that in mind! Thanks a lot!

@TheSeth1 seems that you have bought a dual channel 8gb (4x2) set instead of one single 8gb sodimm to add to you existing sodimm, as everyone here said yes you can but you will loose the dual channel capabilities as dual channel only works with ram same size same cl same clock so i am guessing your 2x4gb in dual channel would perform better that your 8+4 because it's not dual channel but hey it's done now and also guessing you can't return it either way so next time you fancy upgrade ram always find a match to either the one you have or buy a complete dual channel set

sell your existing 2x4gb rams and buy another identical kingston 8gb ram of 2666mhz speed.
so you have 2x8GB = 16GB in dual channel config.
your current config of 4gb + 8gb , of different sppeds, will run at the speed of the slower 4gb ram i.e. 2133mhz only.

oh okay thanks for that insight, uhm so I guess I will just buy another one. Who needs money anyway right ^^ and I dont want to waste it that way.

Hey thank you for your help! So I just buy the exact one again and they will run in dual channel and I´ll be fine with 16GB right?

Yes! The top guys are correct! However you should buy another memory with the same size and speed as the current one! However, as I told you, maybe it's worth more just investing in a ssd m2 2280 that would bring a very expressive speed gain!
