Monitor fails to refresh after system goes into sleep mode.

Hi folks,

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how to deal with this problem with my Acer AL2216W monitor.  To be honest, I'm not sure whether the problem lies with my monitor, with video port on my laptop, or with the operating system or drivers.  The monitor works fine most of the time; but if I leave my computer and the screen saver comes on, or it goes into sleep mode, the monitor doesn't come back when I move the mouse or hit a key.  So, for a while, I'm operating a computer that thinks it has two monitors, but I can't see anything on the second monitor.  The green LED on the power button goes orange when the computer is in sleep mode.  But when I bring the system back up, the power indicator is often very difficult to see.  Turning the monitor off and back on doesn't seem to help.  I've already updated the drivers and ATI Catalyst Control Center with no change in behavior.  Eventually, (say, after 5 minutes or so) the monitor ALWAYS comes back on.  But, it's pretty darn annoying when I try to keep applications live on this monitor and can't see them when I return to address my machine.  I could sure use some troubleshooting tips here.  Also, if it's a hardware problem with the monitor, what are my options?

Thanks in advance,

Ron

We would suggest looking in your power settings and adjusting them as needed to prevent the power to the monitor or video card from being disabled while in sleep.  If you have hibernate enabled, you may try disabling it.

There may also be power settings in the monitor itself, depending on the model. Get the user's guide and it should show you the menu that you can access for the monitor alone. That might help as well.
