Another SSD NVMe M.2 Upgrade Issue Pred Helios AMD 500

Howdy,

So...I just cracked open and attempted to add to my PH517-61 a Samsung 970 2TB EVO NVMe M2. Neither the BIOS nor Windows sees the HDD. Samsung's own magic software cannot locate the drive. Diskmanager does not see the drive.

New SSD (970) is in SLOT 1, and the drive that came with the machine is still in SLOT 2. (It then boots and thats how i'm writing this.) Neither the BIOS nor Windows sees the new drive.
If I swap them and put the new drive in SLOT 2 and the stock drive in SLOT 1 then the BIOS sees the drive in SLOT 2, but says that there is no bootable drives present.

In short I'm a bit baffled as to why the 2nd NVMe slot isnt working. (the one labeled SLOT 1)

Suggestions? I'm plum out of ideas.

At least with i7 PH500 both m.2 slots support NVMe, but SLOT1 does not support SATA m.2 drive. Did you update your BIOS to the latest?

Hi,
Your slot2 is the PCIe/NVMe SSD slot in which you can use either a NVMe SSD or a SATA SSD, slot1 is only for a M.2 SATA SSD, so if you want to boot with NVMe SSD, please follow the steps:
1.Install Macrium reflect free.
2.Create a USB bootable recovery disk with the program.
3 Connect an external HDD with USB to SATA cable and backup the image of the original M.2 SATA drive on the external HDD.
4.Remove the original M.2 SSD and install the new M.2 SSD in the slot2 which is the NVMe slot.
5.Boot with the recovery USB disk and recover the image from the external HDD.
6.Remove USB and external HDD, boot with new SSD.

Thank you Brummyfan for your input, but according to the specs listed for the laptop they are supposed to both be NVMe PCIe.

It doesnt make sense when they advertise the RAID capability they would then put a SATA opposite a PCIe bus. Anyhow, I guess I'll wait until they release a update and fix it.

i have the amd setup, and experiencing the same problem .. my OS is on the orig. nvme in slot 0, slot 1 not recognizing the samsung evo 970 500 GB. bios not tell me anyting. no info on drives at all .. disapointing bios

Yes, BIOS is latest. And No its not working.

Same issue here. Did they solve it ????. With Ubuntu 18.04 with kernel upgrade wifi works fine and with alsamixer sound ok. But the major issue with m2 slot.

Hello,

Any luck? I've done exactly the same and now I have a "dead" disk. BIOS says it is Empty. Device manager cannot find it as well.

As it was already said the Ryzen version only has one nvme m.2 pci-e port the first or second (depends) its sata only seems there is ppl not understanding it yet and on intel variants there might be some models that have the the same configuration depending on country/shop/seller resuming if the nvme is not recognized on bios it means that m.2 pci-e port it's sata only try it on the other port if available so my suggestion/advice is if not able to boot windows with the nvme installed because the m.2 sata won't boot windows in the other port get a external nvme usb enclosure and clone it via usb with easeus partition master or other cloning software this is an easy issue to solve i myself only have one pci-e port just bought a 2.5 sata m.2 enclosure removed my hdd and cloned my 128gb ssd into my 2tb ssd problem solved and i can still use the stock ssd as an external drive and even able to boot into windows from it from a usb dock station so i always have my stock windows backup clone if something happens

Specs and service manual both state that it only supports up to 512MB per a slot. That's why you never see a Helios 500 configured more than 512MB SSD.

It will support more the specs are only what was tested with and advisable not the real support it should support at least up to 2tb at least i have a wd blue 3d nand 2 tb on my G3 572 so should support the same amount on nvme and @techman2000 u'll never see a H500 with more that 512 on stock because it would be a high increase in price and you might not be buying it my m.2 sata costed me £380 same as my 32gb hyperx so you couls put more £400+ on top of the usual stock price just to get a nvme/m.2 larger size and its not sellable resuming bad for business all brands do the same

Is there a confirmation of the max size of the nvme slot? Understand there's only one on the amd rig. Wanting to swap the oem for a 970 plus 1tb. and fresh install
