Firmware update for faulty fan curve on SP513-52NP

Why is the fan curve so messed up?

First thing i noticed when i turned on the laptop, was that the fan was constantly on. And running at a fairly high rpm, for no reason. Machine might be idle and fans would still be going at ~50% fan speed.

I've had to install notebook fancontrol to turn the fan off for temps below 60c. Now the machine is fairly nice to use, on battery it's virtually silent 90% of the time. Like right now, i have email client and firefox with 12 tabs open, and cpu is 41c with fan at 0 rpm.

Someone really messed it up, and this machine isn't nice before you manually adjust things as they should be.

It's not perfect and i could fine tune it more, but i never hit +70c during everyday usage.

So you're saying it's not a bug, just incompetence or just didn't care?

Correct. Not a bug. An over-design feature likely due to how some folks tend to use them on soft surfaces. Jack E/NJ

But that doesn't even make sense, if the cpu is 50° the surface doesn't matter. Will it get hotter faster on a soft surface, yes. But 50° on a soft surface is the same as 50° on a hard surface. But 2700 rpm at 46° is just noisy and a complete waste of battery. This is a 900€ machine, one does expect a certain standard.

I bet the designer were annoyed when whoever programmed the bios, did it with a "ahh screw it" attitude.

Disagree. Soft surfaces can restrict airflow thru the bottom vent. Causing the cpu to not only reach 50* faster but significantly exceed 50* if airflow is sufficiently restricted. It's a design trade-off or compromise as to how a small screen laptop is often used by some folks. Jack E/NJ

Hi @idiocracy , can you share which config you used on notebook fancontrol? SP513-52N is not out of the box and I wonder if I need to create a completely new config or if I can use another Acer computer pre-configured?

What are you after, performance or battery when unplugged?

@idiocracy , I'm after performance. When I work with 3D modeling softwares my core temp reaches 90C+ quite often and then my PC fan goes to 100% speed. What I would like to do is to start notebook fancontrol before using those softwares, set my fan to 100% and then work without the fear of overheating. When I work with these softwares my PC is always plug and lifted to have a better airflow under it.
I don't care about the noise and when I'm working with my laptop unplug I will not use fancontrol.

It doesn't go 100% before +90c?

Instead of manually starting and shutting down NBFC, you should load this config and just leave it, test it.

But you should expect high temps as this machine isn't really built for that kinda work. You would've been better off getting something with a dedicated gpu.

I've attached the zip, unpack it into NoteBook FanControl\Configs and import in the app, after applying the config set it to enable on the main screen to activate the config, otherwise it'll continue to use the default acer config.

Thanks! Yeah I know this laptop is not meant for that, but I'm working from home for a few months and don't want to buy a new one for now.
