My daughter has an Acer Aspire E1-531 running Windows 7. The machine cannot fine any WiFi around our house, however her phone easily picks up ours and shows several of the neighbor's WiFI.
The two network adapters, one for the Ethernet and the WLAN are both installed and working, (Broadcom Drivers) but it does not pick up any wireless. Performing a trouble shooting only give the message that the cable is not hooked up. (access to the internet is fine if I plug the Ethernet cable in) Nothing Wireless is found. Been searching the net for a few days and have tried an abundance of suggestions, but nothing works. I am about to throw her laptop at a brick wall. Anyone have any suggestions. Please and thanks.

Thanks for the reply. Both network adapters (Ethernet and WLAN)  are installed and do not show any problems in the device manager.
  • Make sure that a system restore resolves the problem! To do this, back up your files and then restart the notebook! Press the alt + f10 keys before the Acer logo:

Thanks. Already done that. In fact, I think I have done everything humanly possible. It worked fine with Windows 8, but she wanted Windows 7. That is when the problem started. Anyway, I am going to the computer store and buy a USB Wireless Adapter, and that should solve the problem. Different hardware and different software driver. Wasted two days on this.
  • Can you tell the idhardware of the network card?

The Adapter is Broadcom, and the proper Broadcom driver is installed for the WLAN. I see you have the Atheros driver installed. Maybe I will try that. Thank you.

The wireless connection may be turned off.  Drove me nuts, too; for about 2 weeks when I first got my HP laptop.  Definitely don't throw the device against any wall.  Won't help troubleshooting.
    Suggestions:
    1) Network Connections->right click on your wireless connection->Properties.  If memory serves, there will be an option to turn on the wireless connection.  Make certain the correct router password has been entered.
    2) see below

Thanks for the suggestion wis, however If I go i to NETWORK CONNECTIONS, the PROPERTIES button is gray and not functional.
If I hit the CONFIGURE, the only tabs are GENERAL, DRIVER, DETAILS. The is no POWER MANAGEMENT TAB.

I think the device has an optical drive.  If that is the case, pop in the router installation CD & go through all the steps when you first set up the wireless network. You shouldn't have to do this, but it won't hurt to try.

The router is not the problem. I have two separate PCs running flawlessly on the wireless router. Plus three phones. The router is fine. Anyway I have had enough with this thing. Going to the store to buy a USB Wireless Adapter. That should solve the issue. Thanks to you both for your help. I appreciate your time.

Good for her. I'd want Win7 too. If it picks up the neighbor's router OK then it's probably just tuned to the wrong channel on your router is set to. What kinda router do you have? Jack E/NJ

Don't know where you got part of that quote "shows several of the neighbor's WiFi" but, no it does not show ANY WiFi. MY daughter went to the computer store to buy a USB Wireless adapter, and was talked out of it because they stick out of the laptop and get broken off. He says he can fix the laptop for $30.00. She doesn't have money to throw at this, so she said put Windows 8 back on. That is my project for this afternoon.

Sorry, I got the quote "shows several of the neighbor's WiFi" from the 2nd sentence in your 1st post. As long as Device Mgr shows the wifi is working, the router can probably tune it in.  Jack E/NJ

No problem but i did say "her phone" can pick up the neighbors. Her PC picks up nothing. Thanks.

Well, if Win7 still on the machine and you haven't tried it already, you can download and install the freeware Driver Booster. It's help a lot of folks with issues like this. https://www.iobit.com/en/driver-booster.php  Good luck. Jack E/NJ

In this thread IronFly provided a website for downloads of Broadcom drivers & how to install them. I realize that we are talking about different laptop models, but the thread may provide a guide post as to where to get a Windows 7 driver for your daughter's device. The $30 offer may be based upon a free driver download.
