All Human Interface Devices are not responsive and cannot get to password screen on Aspire Z1-621

Hello,

I have an Acer Aspire Z1-621 running Windows 8.1 that will not accept input from mouse, keyboard (both USB connected) and the touchscreen is not responsive. The machine boots up to the first screen and I can see the time and date and internet symbol on this screen as per usual. When I try to use any HID nothing happens.

FYI. The unit was working fine yesterday. I packed it up and moved it to another location and now this problem. It was moved carefully and has been moved 5-6 times over its lifetime with no problems.

I have powered off the unit via the power switch several times for a variety of lenth of time holding the power button. I have also unplugged the unit while shut down several times. I do not believe it is a problem in the boot sequence. It seems to be only via the HID.

I do not know how or if this computer can be booted into safe mode without an HID functioning. At this momemt I cannot find my boot disk.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Have you checked if there are any drivers with problems in the device manager?

Hi Orensemaj,
Before following any troubleshooting steps, lets find out if the keyboard and mouse is fine.
So first swap the usb ports for both of them. See if any one starts responding.
Also check the cables are fine and no wear and tear has happened.
If possible connect keyboard and mouse to another computer and check if they are working with that system. If they are not its issue with the keyboard/ mouse .
If they function fine with the other computer then go to the next steps.

Disable driver signature enforcement.

1) Press the Power button to turn on your computer. Once you power on the computer, keep pressing the F8 key on your keyboard in 1 second intervals. (Make sure that computer is turned off before trying this step)

2) When the Advanced Boot Options screen displays, use the arrow key to select Disable Driver Signature Enforcement and Hit Enter.
This will restart computer. Check if issue is resolved.If not go to next step.

Update the USB driver

Some times corrupt usb driver may cause this problem.(IMPORTANT: You need to use the keyboard or mouse on the problem computer to try this fix. If you can’t use one of them in Windows, restart it in Safe mode with networking, then try.)
1)Press Windows logo key+ X.
2) Click on Device manager,right click on USB driver and click on update automatically.
Ones updated restart computer in normal mode and check.

Please try these steps first and let me know what happens .

I was able to solve my own problem. I have three USB 2.0 ports on this unit. I had plugged the mouse and keyboard into the same USB that they had previously been plugged into and had been working fine. I decided to shut down, plug the mouse into the third USB port and restart the computer. As soon as I did the cursor appeared on the screen, I was able to get to the password screen and log in to my account as the touchscreen keyboard now worked as well.

From there I plugged the keyboard into what formerly was the mouse USB port, it loaded drivers and began working as well. All HID inputs are working again.

I have no explanation for what happened. Just another weird computer experience. I am glad I am up and running and I hope my experience might help someone else.

Hi Orensemaj,
Good to know that your issue is resolved.
Like I suggested the usb port changing to connect the mouse and keyboard most of the times fixes the issue. The reason is when you use a new port the computer refreshes the drivers to recognize the device again. And that fixes the issue.
