    Hi BCarol,
You can try a few steps to enhance the performance of your computer.
1)Many times computer runs slow because of too many unnecessary programs loading up in the background when we start our computer. So go to Task manager
Check in Task manager > Startup to see what is starting when you first turn on your laptop and that are running in the background. The less programs, except for the ones you that you really need , the better. Also check for non Windows processes that you don't need.If in doubt, just disable them do not delete them.
Then end task for that and restart computer. Check disk usage . If its still showing 100%. then go to next step.

2)Update all drivers in  device manager. Press windows +X, click device manager.
Under device manager if you see any driver with flag, update driver and  install the correct version of that driver for that device. Then check the disk usage. If its less that 100%. GREAT. If not go to next step.

3)Another way is to increase the virtual memory.Follow these steps

Click the Windows + Pause break

Go to advanced system settings from the options in the left panel.
Now go to performance tab and click on settings.
Under settings, go to the advanced tab again and click on Change for virtual memory.
Uncheck  "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives", click Custom
Choose your drive(c) Enter a custom paging file size that is larger then what your computer is currently set to.Initial/Max size (This value varies, depending on your computer. If you’re not sure what value to use, just enter whatever the number is in the Recommended category.
    Now click SET and OK.
This should also help your computer to run faster .
    4) Delete Temp and prefetch.
    Press Windows +R
    type   prefetch
    Hit Enter.
Now press Control +A to select all.
Shift +delete to delete the all the prefetch. Once all is cleared come out of the page.

    Press Windows +R
    type %temp%
    Hit Enter.
Now press Control +to select all.
Shift +delete to delete the all the temp files.

All these steps should help in enhancing your computer performance. Please let me know if it helped

Thank you Kamalika. That was helpful. Now my task manager reported disk space is about 90%. However, I have very little saved on this computer. What is optimal disk space% and why would I have 90% filled when I have very little saved on this computer?

Other considerations; with 2 caveats. Fix 2, safety of using Driver Easy is unknown, so best not to use it. Fix 8, if you don't know how to work in the Registry, avoid it.
Why Windows Defender is good enough.  If you run 2 anti-virus programs, your laptop will crawl. Kaspersky controversy. For the occasional piece of malware that gets away, run the quick scan of SuperAntiSpyware, free edition.
Disk Cleanup & Disk Defragmenter are handy enough to pin to the Taskbar.
There is very little users can do about the resource hog, Windows 10 updates, except to switch to Linux.

    Hi BCarol,
Thanks for your response. Ideally when you do not have much saved in computer the disk space should not be around 90%. But there may be some back ground programs or a particular program which is causing this issue. To detect that I will recommend a CLEAN Boot.
Follow these steps for clean boot.
1)In the desktop screen press windows logo key +R(in keyboard), type in msconfig and press the Enter key.
    2) On the General tab, click Selective startup.
3)Clear the Load startup items check box.
2)Click  Services tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then tap or click Disable all.
3)Now click or tap Startup  and open Task Manager
    4)
On the Startup tab in Task Manager, select each item and then click Disable. Close Task Manager
5)Again click or tap Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click OK, and then restart the computer.

Now ones computer is restarted check the disk space in task manager.( U should find it very low)
Next one by one add the load start up items . Also add them in start up tab in task manager.
Restart computer and again check disk space.

I understand that this is a long process but one you find out which program is causing the disk space to increase radically, you simply need to disable that particular one.

After completing your troubleshooting, restore your system by  following these steps.

    1. Click Start and type msconfig in the search box.

    2. Press Enter.

    3. On the General tab, select Normal startup.

    4. Click OK.

    5. Click Yes when asked to restart your computer.

Please let me know if this helped resolve your issue and made computer faster than before.

I know this is a old thread but i have a E5-575 that was horribly slow. (out of the box it took 20 hours to set windows up).

Anyway I fixed it by turning safe boot off in the bios and blowing away the acer install and installing win 10 and all the drivers manually.

it took about a hour to install and update everything to the latest windows update build and all the latest drivers with driver update.

So the reason these run slow out of the box is either the acer windows install or safe boot.. I've had safe boot slow other systems down but at least now for a 3/4 year old laptop its great and fast enough for everything BUT games
