Purchased Predator 17, got a few questions to ask

Hi all,

Just recently purchased my G9-793-79V5 recertifed(refurbished) from Acer. Couldnt pass up the deal, plus a 2 year accidental coverage warranty included.

Anyways I am loving the laptop so far, a few questions however.

I know high temps are a big issue here regarding the Predator lineup, I only play at the moment both Forza Horizon 3 and 4, Rocket league etc. Planning on moving my whole library here soon

I have been monitoring my temps via MSI afterburner and I have seen the CPU goes as high as 94c. I saw the repaste fix on a different post. Decided to try it since there was no void warranty sticker anywhere especially on the heatpipes. Applied some MX-4 and temps dropped about 2c or so. GPU temps are good at around 70c.

For comparison I did buy another Predator 17 brand new from my local electronics store but it has the 1060. Temps out of the box playing the same games hover around 83-85c on the CPU. Does the 1070 have a huge affect on the CPU temps? If its normal then all is good and I can look into undervolting a bit, but I want to get second opinions.

Also this model came with a 60hz non GSync panel. I've seen a post about some users sending in their Predators to Acer for repair and they come back with a 60hz monitor instead of the 75hz GSync monitor. Anyone here with the same model have the 75hz monitor?

Specs for reference

i7-7700hq
GTX 1070
16GB RAM
256GB M.2
1TB HDD

    Hi @JRey,

    Along with the unit there can be other programs running at the back ground. try to remove the unwanted apps, follow the simple steps below. hope it will help you.

    >>>Power Reset
    Disconnect the charger. Please check for a battery reset PIN hole at the bottom of the device. The reset hole would have a battery symbol next to it. Insert a paperclip into the hole and press for four seconds. Let the computer sit for 5 minutes with no power. Reconnect and monitorthe CPU usage.

    >>>End Task of running programs and Disable Startup program in task manager. This fix can help you quickly end high CPU usage issue when your device becomes extremely slow or even get stuck with running programs:

    Press Ctrl + Alt + Del keys at the same time to bring up Task Manager;
    Select Task Manager > Check and select programs that are taking high memory and CPU usage > Click End Task to close selected programs or apps.
    Click on Startup on Task Manager > Select and right-click on unnecessary programs or apps > Select Disable to stop them running from Startup.

    >>>Run DISM command to decrease high CPU usage

    Right-click on Start and select Command Prompt (Admin), sign in with your administrator account;

    Type: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and hit Enter;

    Type: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess and hit Enter;

    Type: sfc /scannow and hit Enter.

    >>>Disable Superfetch and Windows services to fix Windows high CPU usage

    Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager;

    Go to Services tab and click Open services;

    Navigate and locate Superfetch, right click on it and select Properties;

    Click Stop to end the Superfetch service and click OK to confirm the change.

    >>>Press Win + R to open Run dialog > Type: msconfig and click OK;

    Check Hide all Microsoft services under Services tab > Uncheck all other remaining services > OK to save all changes;

    Restart Windows > Enable any services individually and reboot PC > Repeat the process till Windows high CPU usage issue gets fixed by then.

    Accept if its Helpful.   B)

    I appreciate your response however that did not answer my questions whether or not the 7700HQ temps are normal when paired to a 1070.

    I will try a few methods mentioned here to be on the safe side however

    i have the same laptop but with i7 6700hq and i get around 82 degrees cpu temp when on high load...i think 7700hq requires more power then 6700hq maybe thats why....and yes the more powerful graphic card the more heat will be produced!!!! have a nice day

    "I know temps are a big issue here regarding the Predator lineup"

    Yeah sadly enough I haven't been up to snuff on gaming laptops I've had an HP dv6 with an i7 sand bridge paired with a 650M for quite awhile but got rid of it ever since I've moved, I've been in need of a new laptop I can take during travel, I know it won't be as powerful as my l rig at home but this purchase was good value,I was looking at MSI, and ASUS but couldn't justify the price tag with a 1070 built in

    But thanks for the suggestion I'll definitely look into undervolting

    I have the same spec except i7 6700. My display is indeed 75hz.

    Check out this video, it says for Helios 300 but the CPU (i7-7700HQ) is the same for your unit and will work.
