I am trying to upgrade my old 256GB SSD to the EVO 970 500GB NVMe SSD

I brought my computer in for computer repair after I cloned my 250 GB SSD (SATA) which is in the computer so that the 500GB EVO 970 NVMe SSD contains all the system information that the SSD that is in the computer has. The computer technician informed me that the computer is not able to see the EVO 970 NVMe because the BIOS needs to be updated. My Bios is version V1.12. Do I simply click download at the following link? https://www.acer.com/ac/en/GB/content/support-product/6397?b=1&pn=NX.G7WAA.003

I am assuming that I would need to download BIOS Version: V1.14 at the above site address and the computer would be able to see the 970 EVO NVMe M.2 SSD. Please let me know if that is correct.

When I have it plugged in the specs. are not that bad as per the CrystalDiskMark results. It even performs better than the Samsung 970EVO when I am using the SAMSUNG 970 EVO as a flash drive and plugging it into an NVMe enclosure. I was transferring videos and reached speeds close to 400 MB/s yesterday when I was transferring from the SAMSUNG 970 EVO to the SATA 3 SSD that is plugged into the computer. I don't think I will be able to reach the advertised speed of 3500MB/s though even if I am able to figure out how to plug the SAMSUNG 970 EVO directly into the computer . I am thinking that the upgrade may not be worth the moderate boost in performance.

What happens is that the ssd nvme is plugged into an adapter! That's why his speed is far below normal!

It is very difficult for the hardware to reach the maximum speed set by the manufacturer, even in ambient conditions! However, if you connect the ssd nvme directly to the motherboard, the transfer speed will certainly be much higher!

Hello,
I looked at HWINFO and attached the printout. I was told by ACER support about a month ago that the motherboard supports NVMe so I purchased the SAMSUNG 970 EVO. I think the 970 EVO is an M.2 2280 pci gen3X4. From the HWINFO printout would anyone be able to tell me whether my motherboard can support the SAMSUNG 970 EVO?

As it supports nvme gen3x2, probably the motherboard will recognize a ssd gen3x4! However your ssd gen3x4 will work with half the bandwidth!

So what you are telling me is that it will work but at half the speed adverrtised? It is not recognizing it now but the computer repair guy told me that if he updates the BIOS then there is a 50% chance that it will work. Is Gen3X2 represented by "Version: 3.0" and "Maximum Link Width: 2X" in the HWINFO printout as shown below for my computer specs ?

Yes and yes! However I suggest that you choose to buy one of the ssd's shown in the photo, as there are cases of notebooks that have not detected some ssd models!

From what I saw in your photo, it seems to me that there is already some device connected in the door!

Can you expand the other ports?

I actually have a SATA SSD plugged into that drive now. The speed is not bad but I am trying to see what the maximum performance looks like with my current computer. I don't know if I can do much better even if I have an NVMe 970 EVO Gen3X4 Solid State Drive with a speed of 3500MB/s, as stated on Amazon: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07BN4NJ2J/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The speed of ssd gen3x2 will be greater than that of a sata 3! However you will only feel that the speed of the nvme is superior when transferring large files! How fast does your ssd 3 sata hit?
