Hi all,
My laptop won't do Windows updates because it says it doesn't have enough free space. I don't have an apps downloaded or a million of things saved to the hard disk and I've even purchased an external SSD and also and SD but to no avail.

Any advice please?

TIA

Inorder to fix this issue you need to create window media creation tool which will free some space on the hard drive for the updates. Below link shows how to create it. But inorder to download or save info you must use SD card or external HD

    HI @IanNic23
Please create a USB recovery media before making any changes on your device.

The quickest way to clear space in Windows is to run Microsoft’s built-in Disk Clean-up utility, or an alternative such as CCleaner Free, Microsoft’s Disk Clean-up utility can safely delete hidden system files. Click the button that says “Clean up system files” for the option to delete various files including “Previous Windows Installation(s)”.

    >Next, go back to the Storage page and click on your C: drive. Windows 10 will scan your 32GB and tell you how much space you have free.
    >Another way is to add a 32GB or 64GB SD or microSD card  more storage. You can create an icon for the card and keep it on the desktop for quick access. If you have large collections of photos, music, movies etc then you can store them on SD cards. Further, you can now install programs on SD cards, too.
Though the disk cleanup method basically deletes every insignificant junk files and help regain some disk space, you need a manual deletion of this update installation files, which will definitely release several GBs of storage for you.
Step 1. In the search box in Windows 10, type cmd and Command Prompt should appear in the result. Right click on it and choose Run as administrator.
Step 2. In the Command Prompt window, type the commands and press Enter after each:
    net stop wuauserv
    net stop bits
Now follow the path C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution. Open the SoftwareDistribution folder and delete everything inside, not including the folder itself.
Step 4. Return to the Command Prompt, now type the other two commands and press Enter after each:
    net start wuauserv
    net start bits

    >Finally, you can open File Explorer, right click on the C: drive, select properties, and check the box for disk compression. According to Microsoft when done (takes a while) that should reduce the disk space by 1.5GB (-x86) to 2.5GB (-64)

    >>You can manually try to update using the Upgrade Assistant tool.

Head to the Windows 10 Download page. Click on the “Update now” button to download the Upgrade Assistant tool. From the download page, click “Update Now” to use the Update Assistant to walk you through the upgrade. The second option is for creating install media on a drive or disc. The Update Assistant will walk you through the upgrade process but keep in mind it will take some time and your system will restart several times.

    >>Run these Commands to Resolve Any System Integrity Issues
Press Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (Admin) then type each command then hit Enter on your keyboard.
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

    Hi @lanNic23,

Your computer is having only 64gb memory. So you have to store everything on the external drive and nothing on the unit. or tried to do a reset and install the Win media creation tool so that it can have some space on the unit. Remember if you install the media creation tool then you will not have Acer default apps on the unit. For downloading media creation follow the link below. Also remember to take the backup. Hope this will solve the Issue you have.

    Hi @lanNic23
It seems that Disk Cleanup is supposed to take care of deleting old files from this folder but failed to do so. But I found this command to be run from the command prompt with Admin privileges:
    C:\>Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
This restored several gbs of disk space and allow the Windows 10 upgrade to 1709 to install.

We have the same problem (only a 32Gb internal drive) where Windows won't accept an external drive to run the updates which totals at 8 Gb storage requred.
There is very little on the computer now, accept for windows. Applications are run through a portal on the internet.
We have done all fo the cleaning and tried the Windows update recommended above. Still nothing, as the internal storage needs to have 8 Gb spare. My 500Gb external drive cannot seem to help in any way.

Microsoft does not support installing Windows 10 directly to the external hard drive, but you can try the work-around described in the video below.  Seems rather awkward to have a dangling hard drive, but if SSD upgrade is not possible; the inconvenience must be endured. Backup everything before you start.  It may be necessary to re-assign the drive letters upon installation of Windows 10 to the external hard drive.
