    Hi Elenizze,

FIX: The Drive Where Windows Installed is Locked in Windows 10/8/8.1

The drive where Windows is installed is locked error

Method 1. Fix "The drive where Windows is installed is locked" by refreshing PC

    1. Restart your computer
    2. Boot from the Windows 8/8.1/10 installation media (the original DVD or USB drive).
    3. Click Repair your computer
    4. Click Troubleshoot and then click Refresh your PC
    5. Follow the wizard instructions to complete the process

Method 2. Fix "The drive where Windows is installed is locked" using bootrec

In some cases, the “The drive where Windows is installed is locked” error appears due to damage or corruption of the BCD file on your Windows system. In this case, you can deal with the issue by fixing the BCD using bootrec.

    1. Insert Windows installation media (a USB or DVD) and reboot your PC.
    2. On the install screen, click or tap on the “Repair your computer” feature.
    3. Navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Automatic Repair > Command Prompt
    4. Type “bootrec /RebuildBcd” and press “Enter”.
    5. Type “bootrec /fixMbr” and press “Enter”.
    6. Type “bootrec /fixboot” and press “Enter”.
    7. Type “Exit” and press “Enter”.

Method 3. Fix "The drive where Windows is installed is locked" error with Windows system repair disk

Sometimes, "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again" error happens because a critical system file is missing or corrupted. Then you might still see the same error message even after you doing all the steps in the solution one. In this case, Windows system repair disk can be the second solution to fix this issue. So it is important for you to create a Windows repair disc beforehand. Here you can do it using EaseUS Windows backup software with simple steps.

To create Windows system repair disk, follow these steps:

Step 1. Plug-in your USB drive, CD or DVD, run EaseUS backup software, and click "Tools".

Step 2. Select "Create WinPE emergency disk" and select the destination USB drive CD or DVD in the new window.

Step 3. Click "Proceed" and wait for the software to create the Windows 10 bootable disk.

As long as you have a Windows system repair disk, you can quickly and easily unlock you hard drive whenever "The drive where Windows installed is locked" error happens.

    Fix #4: Refresh the PC

You can perform a Refresh of your Windows 8/8.1/10 system.

Refresh acts as a reinstall of your Windows 8 without affecting your personal files. This might fix the “The drive where Windows is installed is locked” error.

To run Refresh, follow these steps:

    1. Restart your computer
    2. Boot from the Windows 8/8.1/10 installation media (the original DVD or USB drive).

If you don’t have your original Windows 8 installation media, go to Fix #1: Use Easy Recovery Essentials

    3. Click Repair your computer
    4. Click Troubleshoot and then click Refresh your PC
