this a brand new Predator Helios 500 and I found that after every reboot, the speaker icon in the system tray shows a red X and the tooltip message  "the Audio Service is not Running" shows.
When I click it, it shows "Detecting Problems"... then shows the message "Turning off audio enhancements might improve sound quality".. etc.
I can choose "Yes, Open Audio Enhancements", or "No, Do not open Audio Enhancements"
By this point the red X will have disappeared.

Is it a driver problem?

    UPDATE:
Windows update 1803 just installed and now I have sound back!
Realtek audio drivers are still installed and when I reboot the speaker icon in the system tray doesn't have a red X

  • I had this problem up till recently.
Its caused by the driver windows update auto installs.

I fixed it by uninstalling it then manually installing the "Windows Generic" HD audio driver then going to Acer's driver download site and installing the Realtek driver that ends with "85".

    Hi _albie_,

    Step 1:

Make sure that Windows Audio service is started.

    a. Click Start, type services.msc and press Enter.

    b. Double-click "Windows Audio" service.

    c. Click the Log On tab.

    d. Click Local System account, and then click OK.

    e. Right-click "Windows Audio" service, and then click Start.

    f. Follow the same steps for "Windows Audio Endpoint Builder" service.

This is a Helios 500 specific issue.

I tried many standard fixes and my above method is what ultimately fixed it.

this didn't fix it. After making those changes, the speaker with red X still shows after reboot
  • Did you try what I posted above?
Once your laptop reboots from installing Realtek and it installs again after reboot let me know.

    2) enter SNID
    3) look for Audio section
    4) download the driver with name "Audio_Realtek_6.0.1.8485_W10x64_A.zip" -> extract it
    5) control panel -> device manager -> sound, video and game controllers
    6) right-click Realtek(R) Audio
    7) update driver -> browse my computer -> navigate to exracted drivers -> Windows installs it
    8) Reboot
    shows red X

Audio services are set to "Automatic"
  • Ok well if you decide to try my suggestion let me know. Good luck!

yes, I did that too and actually now I get no audio whatsoever (nothing through headphones and nothing through speakers)
Device Manager shows no problems with devices.

Then right click your sound icon and select properties then find your realtek speakers on the list and Right click > set as default

I did that and the speakers were already set as default (good idea though)
I've attached a few screenshots - everything looks normal to me, but maybe you can spot something that looks wrong

Also, in services.msc the following are running and set to automatic start:
    DCOM Server Process Launcher
    RPC Endpoint Mapper
    Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

I had this issue for a while.. (3 weeks?) And it "magically" appeared fixed doing the method i described.

When installing Acer's realtek driver and it installs and prompts for reboot, does it automatically restart the installation procedure after? For me it was a loop until I canceled the install after reboot.

I didn't see an automatic restart of the installation
  • Ahh I opted to stay on 1709 but let my drivers continue to be updated by windows. Good stuff! Nice find!
