Aspire ES1-732 won't boot: black screen and fan at max speed

This Aspire ES1-732 will power on, but the screen stays black and the fan immediately goes to max speed and stays there. If I knew how to reset the BIOS (remove CMOS battery and short the terminals for 1 min? How?) I'd try that. The disk is okay; I removed it and booted it to Windows on another system.

Is this a motherboard problem? What steps can I take?

  • Did you try to update the bios and now the notebook turned into a brick? Did you check if the image appears on an external monitor?

    Thanks for the note.

I didn't update the BIOS.  I'll see if I can find an HDMI cable to check what happens with an external monitor. But... the fan.
