The DVD drive is vertical like previous desktop models but is it a laptop style slim drive? Previous models had a slim tray face plate but photos of the new TC-885 show it has what appears to be a full size drive face plate. So how is a DVD held onto the vertical tray? By snapping into a hub like on laptops? Or, held with plastic tangs like some classic desktops that featured vertical optical drives?

Thanks, but I want to know how DVDs are held onto the tray. A photo of the open tray would answer my question.

A design on DVD drives has the spindle fixed vertically in the center of the tray, instead of having it move up into the hole on the disc. The disc snaps on to the spindle, just as it would snap into a DVD case, keeping it from falling. These are usually in small form factor desktop PC's also.
Another design used in most desktop PC's is to have 4 small tabs on the tray that hold the disc vertically until the tray is closed.
    For example

Here's the procedure to install the slim model DVD drive. Remove three screws from chassis and take out the slim ODD cage from chassis

Yes, I know the two types, having been using desktop PCs, and a couple of laptops, for two decades. This new Aspire model shows a tray face plate that looks like that found on a traditional full size optical drive. Previous Aspire models use a laptop style drive. What I want to know if anyone here owns one of these new Aspires and, if so, if the optical drive uses the snap-on hub tray found on laptops like in the upper photo or, instead, the tray type shown in the lower picture.

So, can anyone show what this model's DVD drive looks like when open?

The TC-885 uses a standard slimline optical drive, just like those used in many laptops. As such the CD/DVD disc will snap into place on the center hub.
