Aspire R5-571T - System pauses 10-20 seconds, then attempts to 'catch up'

My Aspire R5-571T worked just fine for almost a year.  But, late last year, it started 'pausing', where nothing worked, for 10-15-20 seconds, then attempt to catch up on all the mouse movement and clicks.  Got to point that I did a reset on the system.  And, for a couple of months, the laptop worked fine.  But, now, it has started it again, with evermore frequency.  Looking in Task Manager, when pause happens, Chrome, Firefox, Outlook or whatever I'm using turns red and says (Not Responding).  When it first started, it was once every couple of hours, now it's once every couple of minutes.  What I see is Drive activity goes to 100% during the occurrences, but that may be a red herring, byproduct of hanging app.  The laptop is not hooked up to anything but a mouse, and disconnecting it makes no difference.

I turned off Fast Start in the Power Settings, but that didn't make any difference.

Any help would be appreciated!!  To the point of chunking it into the trash.

    In working to fix a OneDrive issue, it was suggested to run the SFC and DISM.exe commands from the dos prompt.  Running the system file checker (sfc) corrected the problem.  So, it had to be an issue with one of the Windows updates that caused the problem for the laptop.  With running a system reset, and then applying all the updates, brought the problem right back.

    ->Uninstall unused programs.
    ->Delete temporary files.
    ->Install a solid state drive.
    ->Get more hard drive storage.
    ->Stop unnecessary start ups.
    ->Get more RAM.
    ->Run a disk defragment.
    ->Run a disk clean-up
    ->Try for Clean Boot
