VX15 laptop Strange Rectangle on Screen and flickering

Hi there,

I've had an Aspire VX5-591G for about 18 months, it sits on a desk and doesn't ever travel and it's connected to an external screen, keyboard and mouse.

Everything works fine apart from the screen which has a range of quirks. I will often leave the screen closed when working on the second screen but will fold it up when I'm working on things which require more desktop space. However when I open the lid the screen will sometimes:
  • Not turn on at all. Sometimes repeated opening and closes will bring it back, sometimes a reboot, sometimes multiple reboots (and removing the power cord).
  • Turn on but flicker a lot. You can tell that this is proper hardware flicker, not anything on the computer. It's like the cord inside is loose or something
  • Turn on but displays a ghost rectangle over the centre of the screen (pic : here). The rectangle will gradually fade over the course of about 2-3 hours until the screen returns to normal. It's definitely on the screen itself and nothing to do with the PC and the second screen displays fine.

Is this just a hardware fault / lose cable somewhere or is there anything I can do to fix it?

Thanks

Olly

Yes, you probably need to replace the video ribbon cable (part # 50.GM1N2.008) if the lid is frequently open/closed. It's conductor traces often are damaged or cracked in the congested hinge area from wear&tear of opening/closing the lid too much.  Google the part number. Not too costly. Jack E/NJ
