In 2011, I had time and money enough to build myself a nice computer.  It was my 5th build, but my first for myself.  I went to-of-the line for 2011, Intel core i7 2600K.  I also went with a high-end gaming motherboard (asRock P67).

Rverything went well for nearly 7 years, and then the CPU cooler fan became unseated and grew very loud.  I tried to reseat it, but the clips/screws only became more useless.  I decided to replace the Heat Sink Fan with a fan worthy of the motherboard.  I bought a "Core Frozr L" from MSI.  It was the most highly recommended CPU fan for the P67 motherboard.

I've never had something like this happened before, but once I had installed the new fan, the motherboard was dead.  00.  No post.  Nothing.  I replaced the old fan hoping that it was just a faulty new part, but nope.  I'd taken each component out and restarted with and without each individual component and each combination of components, and en every case, the computer will not post.

I've given up on the motherboard, however I would really like to have my old motherboard Hard Drive imported to my new computer so the new computer can act just as my old computer did.  My old Hard Drive is 1TB, and nearly 500GB are still free.  My new computer (Acer Aspire TC-780) has a 2TB drive.  I would love to know how the take the ~500 GB from my old drive and copy it into the 2TB drive, so it can boot just like it did in my hand-made computer from 2011.

I don't know if this is possible, but it seems like it should be.  I'd appreciate any information about how to do it, as well as any information about why it is impossible or difficult.  Any help at all will be appreciated!

It is possible that he did not recognize the fact that his hd is in mbr, since, it is quite possible that his old computer did not have the newest bios that are called uefi!
On your newest desktop, press f2 when you turn on the notebook and create an easy password in setsupervisorpassword and then save on exit! Press f2 again, disable the secureboot and find the uefi option and change to legacy or launchcsm and save on exit! This should be done with the old hd connected!

It is possible, if your old hard disk has a SATA pin connector and if your new MB supports SATA in (most do) you can simply insert the SATA cab and the PSU power to the HDD and then the other end of the SATA to your MB's SATA cable slot.

  • You can use the dvd driver connections if they are compatible because the cables are usually the same!

  • You can use the dvd driver connections, if they are compatible, as usually the cables are the same or pick up the old motherboard cables and insert them into the new model! That way you will have the two hd's!

Thanks!  I actually unplugged the main HD which came with the computer.  It's a 2T drive with Windows 10 installed.  Unfortunately when I put the HD from the old computer (a 1TB with ~400GB unused, also with windows 10 installed), the new computer doesn't recognize the old HD.  I was hoping that I could clone the old drive onto the new 2TB drive and have ~1.4TB plus essentially my old computer back, but in a newer, faster shell.

I have a "Power Dock Plus" which is a USB device that allows you to connect two HDDs (3.5" and/or 2.5") as if they were installed in the computer (just a lot slower).  So I can access all the files from the old drive, but I'll have to move them individually onto the 2TB drive if I want to have a new computer that resembles the old one.  I was hoping there was a way to plug my old HD into my new computer and have it work.  Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that's a possibility.  Thanks again for your responses, though!

Holy cow, it worked!  Thank  you so much.  I was a little skeptical because I didn't remember any of those options being available, but once I set the supervisor password, they all became "un-grayed", and I followed your directions.  Now all I have to do is clone the old drive onto the 2TB drive and I'll have a very nice upgrade.  Thanks again!
  • However it would be nice for you to clone using the gpt file system and leave the bios in uefi mode! This mode offers quick startup and when you have finished configuring hd, leave the secureboot enabled!
