I have used this beauty for a couple years after my mother passed it to me. When I received it, I did a clean restore and then created a restore DVD with a bootable USB pen drive. Now I am passing it along to someone else. After backing up the user directory (only) with a 3rd party program, I booted to the USB, put the DVD in the drive and followed the restore instructions.
After 3 hours of "processing," the screen said something to the effect of... "Restore encountered a problem, please try again." When I rebooted the laptop, it was BLANK. No restore partition or data at all.
I did try again, but received the same results.
Is it possible to download a factory restore image? Is there  anything I can do short of purchasing a new copy of Windows 8?

Update: When I created a Windows install disk (10, April 2018), boot and go into advance options, I see a Recovery Partition. Why can I not boot to it and just restore? (F11 does nothing)

Press and hold the power button till the machine completely shuts off. Then turn it back on and immediately press and hold the ALT key while tapping the F10 key. If the ALT+F10 method activates the hidden recovery partition, a recovery screen should appear to let you re-set or refresh the original factory-installed Windows version. Jack E/NJ
