I have the same problem. I thought I did a mistake with the laptop (like pressed the lid to much while it was in my rucksack; maybe the cold outside affected the plastic; et cetera...) However, after reading all the comments I realized how stupid this product is built. Many thanks Acer for making me wasting my time by searching for repairing shops and delaying my Ph.D. thesis....

Remove the cooling system -> remove both fasteners -> loosen them (I used a 6 mm key, but it didn’t fit, but if you try, you will succeed, just put the key on top) -> lubricate (I used wd-40 -> remove excess lubricant -> restore the nest for mounting (I used the "Moment epoxyline" -> wait for 10 hours -> apply new thermal grease -> install the cooling system -> we twist the monitor into the sockets.
This is the most basic. I spent about 10 usd on repairs.  Sorry for my English.

Okay. So, I also came across this ***** show of a hinge mechanism few days back. I googled it and voila! It seemed everybody was suffering with this problem with vx15's. I hope the adventure I went through will be of some help to you guys.
Being in India, I thought getting this thing repaired from Acer guys would be very expensive. So, I went to a local laptop repair shop. As we opened the hinges, we observed the nuts were attached to the very weak plastic back panel. That is the reason of our suffering. This is a serious design issue which was made by Acer purposefully. After seeing this, I made sure I'm not going to them for the repair.
The guy I went to was pretty good. He took some powdered plastic, placed the nuts on their place, put some plastic around it and hardened it with super glue and iron. The nuts were now so tight on their place. This solution is probably better than even replacing the back panel. We did this for all the nuts in both the hinges to make sure it doesn't happen to the other hinge. I realize I should have clicked a photo of it for you guys.
Also, please know the fact that the laptop wont boot up from the battery until the bottom cover is placed. WHY they did this??

    Not done Acer.
    This is Indian Jugaad.
Hey. Would you by any chance be from Mumbai, and if so can you share the number of the person who fixed it for you?

Everyone I go to refuses to fix it this way, and say the back will have to be replaced.

    Thank you.

I woke up, on a normal day a I opened my computer and I heard a crackling sound. I didn't realized what happened so I just pulled further. But it kept crunching. No I'm so freaking mad at Acer. My whole right hinge is coming apart! I am so upset man! I hope Acer will ***** fix this problem! And I will never, ever buy another thing from Acer!

    Regards,

I have this exact same issue, first the left hinge broke and cracked my screen and soon after the right followed. I called acer customer care and they were dire, I couldn't afford to be without my laptop for 10+days so i requested they just send the back lid. They refused despite being under warranty with no good reason why it wasn't possible, and followed that with i'd have  to pay if that was the option I wanted to follow. I'd already had a new screen sent to me out of pocket, I don't see why It's so unreasonable considering how common an issue this is. This the last Acer i'll ever buy.

    Hi everyone,

I'm sorry to hear that you're running into issues with hinges. I can certainly understand the frustration, however, I can assure you that a far larger portion of Acer laptops do not have this issue. A lot of research, time and development go into the area around the hinges to minimize issues, but hinges have been failing on clam-shell notebooks for as long as they've been built, and that's not just related to Acer, a quick google search replacing Acer for another manufacture is sure to produce the same results. If your unit is still under warranty please contact your local Acer support center for better assistance, you can go to our page https://www.acer.com/worldwide/ where you can select the country of your location and under support tab you can find the available service centers and technical support phone numbers.

Unfortunately, the hinge is the weak point in a folding process that also has to be a hollow enough to allow for wires to pass through and not krinkle them. They take all the stress created when opening the device, but it also has to be capable of moving to allow anyone (think children) to open it. I know we've continued to make improvements and modifications to the way hinges work, but if someone was to come up with a way to prevent hinges from failing the way they've done in the past, they would extremely wealthy.

Note: This thread will be now closed.

I am sorry for any inconveniences this may cause,

    Acer-Manny
