ACER E1 572 charger no longer working; small 1mm hole in cable exposing metallic wire

As above. All of a sudden my older laptop, connected to HDMI, lost the charger while connected.

I moved the cable about. It worked for a min. Then cut out. Eventually moving the cable no longer worked. I then noticed a tiny hole exposing metallic wire about 1mm wide. The wire isn't poking out or anything. I can just see it. The part I was moving around to get it working again was near the hole.

Any ideas?

Please check once again iIf you wiggle the connection at the power port on the laptop, does it start charging again if held in a specific position?
You can use a multi-meter/volt-meter and test voltage output of the  adapter.
it could be just the AC adapter, or the DC jack or it could be some other internal components.
Start with trying a new AC adapter > if the jack is damaged, these can be replaced.

I have an Aspire e15 523G 958X cable that is Spanish connection (older one is UK) but has what looks to be an identical size and shape: the only difference is the new one is yellow at the connection and old one is black.
