Display artifacting after WIndows 10 Fall Creators update V3-572P-78MT

After upgrading Windows 10 from 1607 to 1709, the display on my V3-572P went wonky and started appearing with artifacting. See image. Its also having trouble when I click to open windows or the start menu it hangs up for a few seconds.

It is definitely a driver issue. Whether its the Intel HD 5500 driver or Windows use of the driver, I don't know.

I've tried older versions of the driver, reinstalling from the Acer website with no luck.

I tried getting new and older drivers from Intel.com but they won't install. "not compatible" or "not certified for this version of Windows"

If I force the display adapter to use Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the artifacting goes away. Unfortunately, the performance playing any sort of video is no good.

Anyone have a workaround? Different Driver? Ideas?

Is a rollback display driver option listed as available in DeviceMgr? Jack E/NJ

I spent days troubleshooting and eventually did a fresh install of Windows 10. This bad driver is the one that was installed by Windows. As I mentioned in the OP, I tried going to the drivers page for my laptop on Acer.com and installed the most recent driver available, which is older than the one installed by Windows, and that one failed too. It was working fine in Windows 10 1607. The 1709 update seems to have caused the problem.

Yes but right after the 1709 update, the rollback option should've already been available in DeviceMgr. The driver from the ACER site would not have been the same as the rollback option. Jack E/NJ

Doesnt matter now. As soon as the fresh Windows 10 1709 install completed, it downloaded and installed a driver that caused the display problems. There was no rollback. Tried other options. It is defintely a bad driver. Tried numerous other drivers with no luck. Maybe Windows 1803 will fix it?

1803 Didn't fix it. Intel posted a driver update as of May 5, 2018, but that one didn't work either. Getting blank screens and Video TDR Failure bluescreens now that I didnt get before. Looks like I am going to have to trash a 3 year old computer because Intel, Microsoft, and Acer cant get a **** driver to work.

It is absolutely, without a doubt, in absolute certainty a bad driver. The MIcrosoft generic display driver works fine.

Download the latest driver from Intel. Download the zip file. I assume you have Intel Broadwell HD 5500.

Install driver using the "Have Disk" method.

1. Download the latest driver from Intel (download the zip file---not the exe file) and extract/unzip it.

2. Go to "Device Manager".

3. Expand "Display adapters" and double-click the graphics controller.

4. In the "Driver" tab, click "Update Driver".

5. Click "Browse my computer for driver software".

6. Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer".

7. Click "Have Disk..." and click "Browse".

8. Browse to the directory where you unzipped the file you

downloaded, click the "Graphics" folder, and select the

"igdlh64.INF" file. Click "Open".

11. Click "OK" and click "Next". The operating system will install

the driver.

12. Click "Close" and click "Yes" to reboot. The driver should now

be loaded.

If I had your computer, I would make sure I had the latest BIOS from Acers website.

If you still have problems after following above..... then you're going to have to give more info such as what operating system came pre-installed on computer (I assume Windows 8.1) and what UEFI mode are your running .....UEFI mode or legacy mode. I'm hoping you're in UEFI mode and not legacy mode.

Follow Jordan's advice. But also make sure System Protection is enabled so Win10Update restore points are automatically created. Jack E/NJ

Thanks for the comments. I have tried just about everything you suggested multiple times.

The laptop originally came with Windows 8.1 I believe. Been a while. I forget.

It was running fine on Windows 10 1607. When I upgraded to 1709 is when it went south.

I have updated the BIOS/UEFI to 1.31 which is the latest Acer has available. Pretty sure it is running UEFI mode.

I installed the executable version of the driver. I will try installing from Have Disk.

I have wiped and rebuilt the system with 1709 and 1803 and had the same problem. Unfortunately I no longer have a copy of 1607 to revert to.

As soon as Windows 10 1803 installs and automatically downloads the video driver, it goes south. I have to boot into safe mode and change to Microsoft Basic Display Adapter just to be able to do anything with it.

It was our Marketing dept. presentation laptop. I've since replaced it, but its still a good laptop. 8GB RAM/i7/256 GB SSD. Runs like a champ if not for the this issue.

Is the latest BIOS 1.31 or is it 1.32 ? Can you double check that? You said in your previous post that the latest BIOS is 1.31. Where are you finding that information? The information that I have says the latest BIOS is 1.32. Why do you say the latest BIOS is 1.31 ? Are you sure you entered the correct model# ?
