X275 OS Installation

Dear Sir/Madam

I hope you can help: I have recently purchased a Veriton X275 from ebay. Currently it has Windows 7 installed and, for reasons with which I shall not bore you, I wish to install XP.

When I use a genuine XP installation disc, it loads up as one might expect and then just hangs unexpectedly. Why would this be? I have read on a few forums this model has a specific BIOS setting which can prevent XP from loading. But, looking at the BIOS settings there appears to be no way of changing this.

So why does the official Acer documentation for this machine state XP works? Take a look at this pdf:

http://static.acer.com/up/Resource/Acer/Docs/AU-NZ/Desktop/20110225/X275 TSS 1.4.pdf

It clearly states this model will run, and is designed for, XP (as well as W7).

For your information, I am a competent engineer of thirty years experience and build my own computers.

If anyone can help, I should be most grateful!

Best Regards

A possible reason is that you're trying to install a generic, not an ACER-machine specific, WinXP Pro installation. Unfortunately, the ACER-specific WinXP Pro for the X275 is no longer available due to Microsoft rules. However, you may still be able to install a generic 32-bit WinXP as virtual machine under a Win7 host. I'm currently running WinXP, Win98SE and SuSE Linux as virtual guests on my own Win7 host netbook using VMWare. I do this because some of my old software and hardware won't run on Win7 but do run OK on WinXP and the other older OS as virtuals. Jack E/NJ
