the computer I have is a acer aspire x3470 When I restarted the computer after every windows 10 update the computer freezes at 30%  have to shut it down
with power button. and start it up again.  I did do a fresh install windows 10.   Had some problem getting the AMD Catalyst  video driver install too. Some of the updates apply and some did not ?

Sounds like there may be some application or driver that is blocking a restart. The 30% point is where Windows tries to shut down and restart. Does the system do a restart when you ask it to while not installing updates?

If your update gets stuck at 82% then its the bloody old Ralink WIFI PCI card on the motherboard. Took me about 10 days and nights to figure it out. Open up the back screws to get to the motherboard and remove the Ralink WIFI PCI Card which is connected with two black and white wires (antenna). Disconnect the wires using a flat screw driver or nails, unscrew the WIFI PCI express card, connect the computer to a router using ethernet cable and try the update again. I swapped the PCI card with another one salvaged from old Dell PC after successfully updating to Windows 10 update 1709.

Is the Acer Aspire 3470 with 4 GB memory enough to hold the Windows 10 update? My computer used  about 45 GB over the last 5 days in downloading Windows 10 with no end in sight. Can it be the RAM or something else that is causing it to use this much data?

When you say 45GB, do you mean disk space or internet data? The largest Windows updates run about 3GB in size so either way you're out of the norm. 4GB of memory is fine for W10, how much free dask space do you have on C:?

Hi billsey, I mean internet data. On our phone bill, the detailed amount shows up, and it's used 45 GB of data usage. Our computer has 1 T of space. I'm not sure how much on C: how can I check that? Thanks. I wish the phone company would roll back the data usage, but I don't think they would do that.

Laker305, what else is the computer used for during the month? 45GB seems reasonable if you're streaming videos fairly often and excessive if you're only doing email. You might also see excessive data transfer if you're running a tor-rent client in the background or you're infected with a spyware bot. Heheh, I got bleeped there. ;)

Alphanpeter, can you give me the rest of the model number? It should have a dash and three or four letters/numbers following. That will help determine what was originally installed. It looks like there were nearly 20 different video cards during its life.

Billsey, in answer to your question, my wife and I use the computer. Our daughter uses it occasionally, but not enough to rack up 45 GB in 5 days.
While I'm here, I have some other questions that perhaps you can answer. Does Kaspersky Anti-Virus block the Windows 10 update? Can I uninstall Windows 10 update, then start over again? Does Windows 10 update start with a new update each time I turn on the computer or pick up where it left off previously when I restart it? If so, then I'd have several versions all loading at the same time, wouldn't I? That would use more data. Finally, would Task Manager delete all Windows 10 updates? If not, then what will? Lots of questions but thank you for any answers you can provide.

None of the anti-viruses should block Windows update although they can sometimes block third party updates. You can uninstall a Windows update, then reinstall it, though you wouldn't usually do that to ones that have succeeded with the install. The update behavior depends on where an update failed. It will typically redo a download if it thinks the previous attempt has failed completely. You won't have several versions loading at once, they happen sequentially. Task Manager can be used to stop an update in progress, but the update will just restart. To clear all updates you delete the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder (C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution).

It sounds like what you need to do at this point is discover which update is failing, repair the cause, then install the update so additional ones will succeed. If you go into the update history it should tell you which is failing. I'm going to guess KB4088776, since that's the latest big one (700MB or so), though it could as easily be 1709 itself, which was released in September and is over 3GB in size. Once you know which is failing you go into Event Viewer to see what error it's throwing. Armed with the update kb number and the error number you can usually research the cause.

Billsey: I found something interesting in the C: drive. Enclosing an image of it. You'll notice that the same date and time is repeated.
Could this be what is adding to the data usage? If so, how can I delete this? Thanks.

If you look at any of those files you'll find them to be quite small. They are the language files used by the update to display any interaction with the user appropriately. They are, however, for the big 1709 update released on September 30th last year. There should be a CBS.log file on your system created when it tries to install an update (in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS) that might shed light. Also a manual install where you download 1709 as a stand alone file from Microsoft might give better diagnosis of where the problem lies. Once you have 1709 installed and go through the subsequent updates, the usage should drop significantly. I think it's been downloading 1709, trying and failing the update, then doing it all again over and over.

Billsey: Thanks, I'll check that out, too. I'll check for the DBS log file.

Billsey,  now I cannot get online at all. It shows that the Realtek PCle GBE family controller adapter & Kaspersky Data Escort adapter both have driver/hardware problems.

That sounds like a different issue, though it's possible there's some creeping corruption that's affecting weirdly different things. Try rolling the driver version back on the realtek.

Kelly23, I'm not sure what you are asking. You should probably start a new thread for your issue. Be sure to include the model number of your computer, the Windows version you are running and details of the symptoms you see. Normally the recycle bin is displayed with an icon on your desktop.

The post (#4) by gg999 is spot on. As soon as I removed the RAlink WLan card ... *boom*... the update would complete. I must have tried 15 times with it in place, and the Win10 install failed at 82% every time.
