I recently purchased an Acer V5-571P notebook, used in very good condition. It has just developed problems with the touch pad in that it will work for a little while and then become unresponsive. On the advice of a friend, I bought a trackball and that was fine but now it's exhibiting some of the same issues. When I click on a site or email, etc., it will not open but instead open a new tab. I was hoping someone would have an idea of what's going on. I have investigated drivers and Windows at least says there are no new ones. I couldn't get help on the Acer site because my serial number and SNID could not be found. The machine was originally Windows 8.1 but had been upgraded to 10 before i bought it.

    Hi,
Could you please go to BIOS settings and check whether the Touchpad is in Basic mode, if it is, switch to Advanced mode and see whether it helps.
You have to move to Main tab to view the Touchpad( as in the snip).

Might go to Settings>Devices>Mouse>Additional Mouse Options and check what is your setup and it is working. There is a click test under Buttons. Personally I like medium click & pointer speeds, extra large mouse pointer, and long mouse trails.

Thanks. I'll try these things. i think I'm dealing with more than a touch pad/mouse issue considering that even if I click on an email with my finger or the trackball, it still opens another tab. When I go into devices it says the touch pad is working fine...I'll try the BIOS thing and report back.

Got into the BIOS and went to main but my menu was very different and didn't give a touchpad option. I guess I'll run this by my grandson (don't laugh, he's fixed people's computers). BTW, I've run Avast, Malwarebytes and Adwcleaner. Everything came up clean.

Just an off the wall thought but there is a switch in the Mouse settings that reverses the buttons...

Could you please go to Device manager(right click start), expand "Human  Interface devices" and "Mice and other pointing devices", post the snip of it as in my snip.

padgett, do you mean options for left or right as main button? Yes, and it's on left. Is there any point to my switching it?

brummyfan2, I will try this but it will be tomorrow. Embarrassed to admit  probably can't post it on my own, but I'll learn.
