I apologize for the double post as it looks like this is a more appropriate section for my question.  Moderators feel free to delete my post in the Legacy section.

I put off the Creator's Update for Windows 10 for months as I knew it broke the auto brightness feature on my computer (locked it at 100% with no way to change it).

Windows finally forced me to accept it.  Well, not quite forced.  But every time I rolled it back it was telling me it was ready to update again and I wouldn't get any more security updates if I didn't update it.  So I've accepted the update.  But of course, even on the latest version of the Creators update, brightness is still broken.  There are no settings anywhere for it.  The function keys don't do anything any more either.

I would give just about anything to get this resolved once and for all.  I'm posting in this forum as somewhat of a last ditch effort.

To summarize...

Problem:  The Windows 10 Creators Update takes all Brightness settings out of the operating system and locks it at 100% brightness.

Trials:

  • Updated drivers
  • Downgraded drivers
  • 3rd party options (worked prior to Creators, then have been broken in Creators)
  • Intel GPU Control Panel
  • Advanced Power Options
It's almost as if the update just stripped all brightness settings out of Windows completely with this update.  It's very odd.  Maybe Acer could release an updated driver or option that could fix it?

I've become pretty convinced there's simply no fix for this right now on this computer.  But we'll see!   TIA...

    Hi,
Give this a try, go to Device manager, highlight and right click your display adapter, uninstall the device( check the box for driver as well), click Action at the top and select "scan for hardware changes", reboot and see whether it helps.

Thanks for the suggestion - I've tried that previously with no luck.  I've tried going with the Microsoft Display Adapter instead of the Intel drivers as well.  Unfortunately none of that has worked.

    Hi,
Give this a try, uninstall the Generic PnP Monitor driver in Device manager, reboot and let Windows install the driver, HTH.

I can't believe it, but this worked.  I've been battling this problem for months and no other forum (including MS support) has included this suggestion anywhere (maybe I haven't been searching well).

When I went to the device manager, it showed "PnP Monitor (Standard)".  I uninstalled it, including the drivers, and then rebooted.  Now it shows "Generic PnP Monitor" and works perfectly.  It also isn't trying to update it or install anything different when I scan for hardware changes or try and update the driver, which makes me think that maybe the Creators update adds an incompatible monitor to this particular device when it updates?

Either way, it now works.  It seems silly, but my jaw is in a constant state of "dropped" right now.   Thank you brummyfan2!

You are most welcome :) yes, most of the problems caused by automatic driver updates in Windows 10.

The INTEL HD GRAPHICS Driver is all that's needed to solve this problem. Download it at www.intel.com
