Purple bar has appeared at bottom third of screen , I have updated drivers for the display but will not disappear. I have restarted, turned off the laptop and left overnight but alas still remains. I tried a print screen, but when saving the image with a graphics program the purple bar was not showing, so may be a display fault.

Does the purple bar disappear when HDMI-ed out to a TV? Jack E/NJ

OK, means your graphics adapter seems to be OK. While you haven't revealed your ACER model & number yet,  I'm gonna guess it's likely either (1) a video ribbon cable conductor trace break in the hinge area usually resulting from wear & tear of opening/closing the lid too much--- or --- (2) the video ribbon cable connectors at the screen and the motherboard need to be re-seated a half-dozen or so times to clean their contacts.

OK. Google "f5 series disassembly screen" for youtubes on how to access the video ribbon cable and its connectors. Jack E/NJ
