My father restarted his Acer ES 14 (es1-420), and now we're getting the "Default Boot Device Missing or Boot failed" error message. Upon pressing enter I can choose 1 option which is "windows boot manager", however it leads back to the same error message as before. What I've tried:
- looking into the bios info and the hard disk is still listed (model name and serial number)
- changing priority from windows boot manager to HDD and vice versa, have also tried changing UEFI to Legacy and loading setup defaults.
could the hard disk possibly be damaged/detached?, or is this a bios issue where I need to update (currently on V1.06), any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

try to press Alt+F10 at boot and if it's able to enter windows recovery, choose to repair your system.

Tried it, and it doesn't work. However something in bios called "D2D Recovery" is enabled and is using the alt+f10 shortcut, for disc to disc recovery. Also noteworthy info: I don't have a copy of windows 8 available.

    1. create a vanilla Windows 8.1 or 10 installation media from this link: ***
    2. Once you boot using the Windows installation disc, on the Windows 8.x-10 installation window, click on Repair your computer.
    3. Click on Troubleshoot and in the Advanced options. First thing you may try is the Automatic Repair.
    4. If that does not help, then select Command Prompt. Enter the following four commands into the prompt.
    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot
    bootrec /scanos
    bootrec /rebuildbcd
Once the command completes, restart the computer.

    1) download a windows 8 iso using Microsof tool:
    2) download Rufus:
plug your USB flash drive, run Rufus then:
select ISO image from the dropdown menu near "Create a bootable disk"
click on the little icon on the right and browse to the windows 10 downloaded iso file
as  Partitions scheme select "GPT partition scheme for UEFI"
    as File system select "FAT32"
    click on Start
wait until it finish, then uplug your USB flash drive
    3) backup all your personal data *
    4) Reboot to BIOS, pressing F2 at boot if it's a laptop or Del key if it's a desktop, then press F9 to load default and F10 to save and exit
    5) plug your USB flash drive and at boot press F12 (if F12 doesn't work, see if it auto-recognise the USB flash drive or press F2 or Del key to enter BIOS and enable F12 boot menu under BOOT tab), choose the USB flash drive as bootable device

    * you can try to backup your files using this trick from windows installation media:
