    Hi,
If you have any trial version AV programs installed, could you please try uninstalling them with their removal tool, if it's Norton go to Norton site and download their removal tool, if it's McAfee go to their site to download the removal tool, you will be immediately protected by Windows Defender.
Also consider switching your HDD to a SSD, it will improve the performance immensely.

I do not have any trial version AV programs. I have a full version Norton. I'm not too keen on having to upgrade the hard drive has I've just purchased a new laptop. I don't know if it is connected but when I open some programs they will shut down.

I personally have bad experiences with Norton and always advise to stay away from the Symantec Anti-virus programs (Norton and McAfee) and use something else (Such as Avast which is my personal preference, Microsoft Security Essentials, etc). If applications are closing when you are multitasking, it sounds more like a RAM issue. Try Right-clicking your task bar and opening Task Manager and see what your Memory usage is. You can also disable unused startup programs in Task Manager which may help.

Furthermore, I would suggest going to Piriform.com and using CCleaner to clean out junk files from your PC.
